I´m learning so much from your building log! Thanks for looking in Walter and I'm happy your like the build log! I've mentioned before that I'm so tempted to start detailing now, but then the whole project would go off track if I did. There is still plenty of painting to do before that stage. 2018 will be the year of detailing! Regards, Phil W. The Historex Agents crew are good aren't they? I prefer white metal figures given the choice over their plastic counterparts, due to the quality and detail. Yes, the Trumpeter boat has a full crew and it's a bit of a blow not to be able to buy them separately. The link I posted for the French figurine site [MK35 Figures], has some excellent models and I will definitely be buying a few 'characters' from there. Regards, Phil W. I intend to place them in such a way that every compartment will be a diorama with a story to tell. Lots more figures to buy for that though. I want to convey the cramped conditions and the only way to get that across is to fill it with 'characters'. Regards, Phil W. The crew figure will be a nice addition. Shame you didn't get them earlier, they could have helped you with the rivets. Mark

Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This week's update of my U230 U-boat build log see's the continuation of painting the compartments in matt white. As an observation, the part-works recommended colour for these compartments is almost ivory white. I prefer matt white based on my experiences of serving on diesel/electric and nuclear powered submarines. The reason subs have white compartments is that any dirt was clearly seen, making cleaning easier. Photos of U995 also show a white paint scheme with anything below deck level in window grey [RAL 7040]. Due to the large size of the U-boat, progress has been slower than I thought. Three to four coats and plenty of surface area make it more akin to decorating than model painting. I hope to get all the compartments finished in their basic colours between now and the start of the Christmas break. From then on the real fun starts! Starting off by applying a dark wash to the whole of the hull to bring out the detail, followed by further, lighter washes to accentuate the tanks before marking out the waterline, sponging on algae paint and adding modelling lichen to simulate seaweed! The attached photo shows what will eventually be the Junior Rates Mess & Galley, masked off and first coat applied. Sticky Wickett attached the following image(s): Completed projects: 1/43 scale Bedford HA van / 1/43 scale MG TD sports car Current projects: 1/48 scale U-boat [U230] Future projects: 1/148 scale railway diorama / 1/50 scale R/C Volvo F89 logging truck / 1/148 scale Thunderbirds Fireflash
