Now that the Victory Launch is complete and I've settled into my new workshop its time to get back to building again. Thought I'd make some progress with this one. Have now completed the planking ensuring I've left the necessary 4mm gap for the fitting of the keel and have also given the hull its first rough sanding. No filler has been used yet but will need to be used a little later on. All I'm looking for here is to get the rough edges removed and getting the shape right. A word of caution when you get to this part, take care when you are sanding the stern area. There are two cast metal parts to fit so you need to be test fitting these as you go along so as to ensure you have a good fit later in the build. These stern parts are not fitted until stage 64 and by that time it will be too late to make any major adjustments. Next to be done is the fitting of the keel, stem and stern post, hopefully that will be done tomorrow evening.....  Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Nice work on the first sanding Alan. Good point about the cast metal fittings - I almost forgot about those when I was sanding my hull but remembered before it was too late.

Your hull looks much better than mine at this stage. I hope I will get better with practice.
A couple of comments as I do not see why some operations are carried out in the order suggested and I would now bring forward some of the later instructions as I do not see why they are delayed.
We are told to paint the hull in stage 14 ( file 3 ). However in stage 27 ( image 226, file 07 )) and stage 30 ( image 238A file 07) we are told to add extra timbers to the top of the hull which then have to be cut to height, sanded, ( damaging the previous paintwork ), and the paintwork touched up. I did not make a good job of this and damaged some of the paintwork. I can see no reason why this should not be done earlier using the temporarily positioned deck to cut the timbers to the correct height.
The tapered piece of timber shown in Fig 58 ( file 01 ) is probably then not needed.
Maybe there is a good reason for the suggested build sequence but I cannot see it.
I also do not see why the gun ports, shown to be cut in stage 28 ( pic 229 file 07 ), could not be done earlier, prior to painting again using the temporarily placed deck for positioning the lower edge.
Lastly a trivial point, but in stage 27 ( file 07 ) pic 227 the edge of the top timber just added is shown to be chamfered, as it is in stage 33 pic 256, but in stage 34/1 ( file 08 ) pic 265 the chamfer has gone.

Norman. Thanks Norman, I'm sure your planking skills will improve as you gain experience... As for the order of build, I can only agree with your observations. I think you'll find that with almost every kit out there, there will always be questions raised as to why the order of build is outlined the way it is. That's why before starting any build, it is recommended you thoroughly study the instructions so you have a clear idea as to what is required and through that study you can of course choose to carry out the order of build to your own satisfaction. In this instance though I will be carrying out this build as laid out in the instructions provided with the kit. Thanks again, appreciate your comments.... Regards Alan

Tonight I completed stage 12, the fitting of the Stem, Keel and Sternpost.. Started by removing the items from their frets and cleaned all edges of imperfections and burnt ash. Also, on removing the three keel strips I marked them A, B and C so as to ensure they don't get mixed up. First item was to carry out a test fit and during this process I found some minor adjustments were needed to the 4mm slot along the hull, did this using a fine nail file as I found the fit was just a little to tight for my liking. Once happy I then glued the Stem in place and left it to dry before carrying on. Then went on to glue the three keel strips in place. The fit was good enough that I found it was not necessary to hold the strips in place with either pins or masking tape. Last item was then to glue the Sternpost and everything is now let to dry thoroughly whereupon I will then trim the Sternpost level with the keel. Next on the agenda is to get the filler out and to prepare the hull proper for painting. This will be started tomorrow so until then, happy building all....
