I have almost finished planking my hull and do wish to plate the hull. I want to plate it with 1:72 scale pre-made plates.

I'm not fussed about the 'Where is it coming from aguement'! However my question is this:

When is the best time to do it? I'm concerned that I am soon going to be at the stage to fix the rudder in place, however woulld it not be better to plate the hull first as the rudder will also need plating and it will be verry hard to plate both the hull around the rudder and also the rudder itself with the plating in place????

Your help and others will be much appreciated

Hi Blue-Joe! Cool

If you read issue 51 page 12 there is a section "Copper and paint" which say clearly in paragraph 2:-

On the other hand, if you are going to add copper tiles to the hull, keel and rudder, the hinge strips will need to fit over the copper. For this reason, don't fix the hinges to the rudder or hull yet. Stop at Step 7 and don't go on to Step 1 on the next page. The copper material is quit thin, so there is enough clearance in the pintles for the extra thickness of the copper tiles that will be applied to the rudder.

This should answer you question.

Ahhhh thank you very much! Not read that far ahead but had it in my head it would cause an issue!!!

Is there any reason I can't plate the hull once I have finished planking it? I only as although others have mentioned finishing the hull before adding the cannons etc. and although I know they wont go anywhere is there any reason why not. I also take on board what Tomick says about further up the hull where additional detailing still needs to be added but I don't think there is anything to be done that far down the hull now is there???

More of your help would be much appreciated!!!!

Thanks

Sam

Hi Sam! Cool

I've checked my information and there is only one run of the side ladder that goes up the middle of the ship to the entry port and the quarter deck, that is below the top of the copper which starts just below the lower wales. If you fit the plate now then you will need to protect it from scratches, a towel over the building stand will do nicely.

Thanks SoB, not much else to add, other than why not wait for the DeAgostini plate pack, which has plates to scale at 1/84 rather than 1/72.
