I have encountered a problem with the installation and alignment of the quarterdeck in Issue 45, and I am hoping that someone will be able to provide some guidance with the way ahead.

I have dry fitted the quarterdeck in position on the top of the outer hull. The problem with this is that the deck is on an angle to the deck support beams and does not make contact with these beams. The rear of the quarterdeck is 3mm above the support beam at frame 22. I have placed a ruler along the support beams for the quarterdeck and aft and all of the beams are level.

I am considering one of three options to solve this problem:

Option 1 (least preferred): Cut / sand the rear part of the outer hull to reduce the angle of the quarterdeck. (I have temporarily marked out the section to be reduced with Tamiya tape). This is likely to have a negative effect with the measurement and positioning of outer hull fittings.

Option 2 (preferred): Add filler strips to the quarterdeck support beams.

Option 3 (most preferred): Sand the edges of the quarterdeck so that it fits within the outer hull.

If anyone has encountered a similar problem, I would like to hear how this was resolved. Or, alternatively, provide advice on the options presented above.

Your assistance with this is sincerely appreciated.

Regards, Adam.

Hi Adam, my first reaction to this would be to go down the route of option 1. The deck sits on top of the hull sides increasing the height by the thickness of the deck section. If you decide to sand the sides of the deck so it fits inside the bulwarks then you are losing the thickness of the deck that would be added to the tops of the bulwarks. If you sand the edges of the deck then will the deck fit inside the bulwarks all along the length of the deck or will you find the height of the bulwarks sitting below the height of the deck at the front end and therefore requiring a filler piece to be added?.

Can I ask, are you in possession of all the issues for this kit?

Regards

Alan

G'day Alan,

Thanks for the reply. Apologies for the delay in responding. Had to help my son who had car problems - he was stranded on the other side of Perth with a busted starter motor - and Wednesday nights I attend Stained Glass classes.

Based on your reply, and after further thought, my Option 1 is looking like the way to go. This will leave me with a 32mm distance between the top of the bulwark (not including the quarterdeck thickness) and the bottom of the black paintwork under the gun ports. Hopefully this is OK when it comes to the installing the decorative bits and pieces on the outer hull later on.

I am in possession of all the issues, just in case there is anything that I can temporarily assemble and check before cutting away. Just want to make sure before I start slicing and dicing the bulwark.

Regards,

Adam

Happy to help Adam and its good to know you have all the issues. In that case what you can do is look at the build from issue 76, it is the issue where you start to apply the decorative strips along the hull sides and it gives you key measurements between the strips. You could use strips of masking tape, as you did before, to mark where these strips sit on your build, the key distances are given to ensure you have the necessary spacing in order to apply all of the decorations. Once the strips are marked out then you will be able to see whether the alterations to the top of the bulwarks (including the thickness of the deck piece) would cause you any problems. Looking at the official build from Issue 76 onwards should also help you along...Cool Cool

Hope this helps.. Come back to me if you need further clarity....

Regards

Alan
