Today's work: Octagonal section on main yard made and sanded smooth. Slings fitted. Studdingsail booms tapered. All three parts painted black. Hint for the booms. I started to taper the booms on the traditional way, spinning the dowel between my fingers while sanding the other end, but within 3 minutes my spinning fingers had cramp and I barely managed to sand any material off.... so I though let's do it on the smart way instead of the hard way... I wrapped the end on the dowel in a piece of paper to avoid any markings and fixed it into my Dremel. Then wrapped the sandpaper around the dowel and turned the Dremel on. IMPORTANT... ensure you wrap the sandpaper around it and hold the dowel on the far end loosely before you turn it on... otherwise the dowel will act as a whip and likely to snap. With this method I had both booms tapered within 10 minutes with a very even and round taper. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Hi Shipmates, I started to dressing the main yard, and I've seen from other comments here that the footrope supports are made from rope on the real ship and not from brass/metal as it's in the kit. Hence I decided to try something alternative. First I took a 1mm natural thread (not included in the kit) and soaked a 8-10mm long piece with superglue to make it stiff and make the next step easier. Then I took one end of the thread and looped around a 1.5mm drill bit and working from the loop I wrapped it around the stiff part. After I reached the desired 10mm length I made a half-hitch and soaked the whole section (incl. the loop around the drill bit) with superglue. Once the glue dried I placed it around the yard and fixed with a reef knot, in a way, that the stiff support is coming through the middle of the knot. This makes it standing vertical. I think the result is pretty good and because I go for the painted option it won't be disturbing that the stiff part of the thread became a bit darker due to the superglue, compared to the other part of the support (loop around the yard). I'll paint the whole support black. See pictures below about the process and the result, I hope you find this hint useful. Regards Laszlo gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Thanks for all the positive comments. Today's work: All six footrope supports made as I described in my previous post then painted black, together with the bindings. Then the yard fully dressed with all the blocks required for the running rigging. Finally the booms glued in place. At the moment I'm a little bit concerned as the magazine requested to taper the booms from 3mm to 2mm however the metal rings has a bigger diameter (approx 0.5mm bigger) which makes the booms quite loose. Anyhow, I fixed them in place with super glue as instructed, hopefully it will be strong enough to keep it in place. I hope it won't be stressed too much after all the rigging and sails fitted. I planned to kick off the fore mast top (Issue 67) but the base plate and the frame were a bit bent, I guess due to storage. So I soaked both of them in hot water and placed on a glass surface with some weight on them. I'll let them dry overnight, hopefully they get back to flat. I decided to skip Issue 66 (painting the hull) for now (and probably Issues later) and I will complete all the masts and yards first. I will then paint the hull and carry on working on it with the skipped issues. Whoever passed this stage, do you know that will it cause any problem? I think I’m able to build a bit quicker because I have no experience with previous wooden build, this is my first wooden ship. Hence I follow the magazine letter-by-letter, with no or minimal customisation. Also I went for the painted option to able to hide any imperfection on my woodworking errors. I’ve seen your diary, you’re putting lots of additional details into your ship and it looks amazing. Regards Laszlo Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

Laszlo Some very neat and tidy work. I think the magazine has you start painting the hull before it starts to get to crowded with all the additional details so you might want to have a quick look ahead to see how long you feel comfortable in holding off on that oart of the build. Happy Modelling

Hi, I wasn’t mean to skip only the painting but carry on adding bits & pieces. I meant to skip all those steps too which invlolves to paint and adding parts to the hull. My plan is complete all the masts & yards separately first and then go back with the issues and complete the painting and the decorations. Is it feasable this way? I just want to avoid to keep start/stop working on the hull and increase the risk to damage the paint on the bottom. Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

Hi Shipmates, continued to work on fore mast top... Handrail top and bottom prepared, few ribs added. I found it easier if I add couple of key ribs (centre in the middle, two "horizontal' on the sides) first and then fill the spaces equally in between, rather than go around and fit them always next to each other. It makes me easier to make the ribs fully symmetric and better/equal spacing between the ribs. Regards Laszlo gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building!
