Scharnhorst issue 17 We begin working on the front deck structures and this is where this kit gets weirder than anything else I have seen in ship building. Usually one would put up some vertical walls and put a roof on top. Instead in this issue we get the roof and some vertical internal supports to build some kind of drunkenly dysfunctional carport, then will proceed to add horizontal panels over the next few weeks to build the whole thing up into a massive weighty blob of "What? Why would they...? This is weird."

I like the description of it resembling a drunken car port! Made me laugh! Hope all goes well Greyhawk. Regards, Phil W. It is a strange way of getting the parts built but i guess they have gone through and thought this gives the best build option. Sure it will look just fine once you get some more bits to add. Happy Modelling

Scharnhorst Issue 18 Instead of putting up vertical walls around the forward upper deck structure like normal people we begin to install a number of suspended ceilings to build up the structure. I can only guess the German engineers are mightily drunk and fear the sky dropping down on their heads.

Interesting. Does this part get wrapped in one of the brass overlays? I guess if it does those layered walls will provide a good surface area to glue against. Happy Modelling

On the other hand so does a vertical wall In my opinion the only effect of horizontally layered ceilings is enlarging the potential that the surface will be "off" by a bit. Layer 1 and layer 4 may be sitting correctly, but layer 3 is half a millimeter short while layer 2 is half a millimeter too long/wide. Not an actual problem I have confirmed yet, but the potential is there.

Scharnhorst 19 The next round of horizontal layers is slotted in, this time extending the forward deck structure quite a bit. It's starting to look like an actual thing found on the ship.

I was looking at my bismarck kit at the weekend and that works on a vertical wall basis so it is a strange way of doing things in your kit. I thought it might be to save on wood but i guess you have more wood in that assemble than if they had been straight sides. What i was tring to get across was the fact they could have just provided a top and bottom section without anything in the middle. Maybe that is how they started and decided they needed s ome more infill bits to hold sll that brass onto Still your motoring on very well with it and its going to be a very nice model when complete. Happy Modelling

Must be a cheaper way of keeping the cost down but still like it anyway i would go for this kit regards Phil COMING SOON =1/72 Italeri diorama`s Battle for the Reichstag and Stalingrad battle at the tractor factory 1/16 Trumpeter King Tiger with loads of extras ON THE GO= refurbishment of 1/25 Tamiya tiger 1 , amt Star trek kits and space 1999 models

Scharnhorst 20 We stick yet another roof onto our layercake of roofs. We also build a couple of side roofs to stick into the recesses because there's an obvious lack of roofs there. I realize this is incredibly boring being stuck at doing minute and invisible things to the forward deck structure week after week. Luckily next week is the last one to deal with this particular section for a while.

I did not realise that section had so many layers to it and it does seem an odd way of doing things now you look at it. Its probable a lot heavier having all those parts in it? Hope it all continues well. Happy Modelling

Steady progress Greyhawk! I have to agree with Tony, that ship is gong to weigh a fair bit , what with all that MDF layering. Regards, Phil W. Scharnhorst issue 21 We finally finish working on the foreward deck superstructure by sticking in the little "side roofs" we built last week and extending the forward platform with some small bits. We're reached the 15% point in this build so I guess it's time for another look at the whole thing so far.

Its looking the part now and is going to be a lovely model when complete. When does the hull planking start on this one? Happy Modelling

I wish I knew. I can look ahead to issue 27 so far and no planking yet. It's obvious they're shuffling things around to try and get the planking done as late as possible.
