Hi Shipmates, Today I finished the fore mast top with the eyebolts and rigging blocks. Handrail also glued in place. Then came the complete meltdown... ... my first error on the ship... but it's a BIG one... I forgot the golden rule, "measure twice, cut once"... I marked correctly the four key points for deck level, mast top level, etc... and then sanded square the BOTTOM end, resulting too long flats... More annoying that it's a perfect square... Now how am I supposed to fix it??? Obviously I don't have a spare 10mm dowel... I'll try to glue leftover strips onto the flats and then sand it back to the original 10 mm diameter... gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! What I would do is to go to your nearest diy shop and buy a length of 10mm dowel and start over again but falling that filling the bottom of the mast with some left over strips should fix it Martyn Building ? SUCCESS... First I filled up the 5x5 section with 2x5 wood strips, then sanded it down to the same square as the other flats. Then glued 1.5x6 strips to all 4 sides of the long square, then sanded to 10 mm diameter. I used the mast ring as a gauge. I declare the result as a success, although the rework is visible now, once the mast fitted to the ship it will be hidden below the quarterdeck. Phew... let's start over again the square, hopefully this time at the correct end of the dowel... gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! GRRRRR.... I've got no luck with the fore mast... second error, however this time it's not my fault, I blame the mast plan. The magazine keep saying that the plans shows everything in real size, you can copy the measurements from it 1:1. Well... it's not quite true, as I just found out. I've got now, again, shorter part... It's true that the plan which shows the lower fore mast itself (with the dimensions shown) is really 1:1 scale. But the one which shows the complete mast assembly, and where I supposed to take the measurements for the cheeks and hounds is NOT 1:1 scale, it's a tiny bit downscaled. See pictures... I shaped the two parts as instructed then I tried them onto the mast... and for god's sake... the flat is longer than the two parts together, even though I left the cheek a bit oversize to allow final trimming. The two pictures below show the same two parts placed on the assembled fore mast plan and on the individual lower fore mast plan... there is about 5mm difference... This time it's not a big problem as I have left over strips, but I thought just to let you know, in case you are in an earlier stage. I think the same thing would apply to the other mast plans, so please double check. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Hi Shipmates, My trust in the magazine is in the borderline now... Another fore lower mast issue regarding the binding... Three different info, three different result... Info Nr. 1 - Picture from magazine The lowest binding is relatively far from the mast ring, approx in half distance between ring and the bottom end of the cheek. Info Nr. 2 - Mast plan It's much closer to the ring however still haf way between the ring and the cheek bottom. Info Nr. 3 - Follow the 1:1 plan (with the dimensions shown) If I follow the same spacing of the binding from the cheeks for the lower three bindings then the lowest binding will end up very close to the ring. The incorrect scaling of the assembled mast plan (see my previous post) also doesn't help to judge where the binding supposed to be. I thing I'll go for my instinct an use the same spacing (Info Nr. 3), with a tiny bit cheat to get the bottom 3 closer to each other (1mm less distance) to avoid being look ugly and being too close to the ring. Will anything be attached to the bottom of the mast which could be disturbed by the lower bindings??? Please advise if I'm doing it incorrectly... Thanks. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

Today quite busy day... After yesterday's hick-up I sanded square the end of the fore lower mast (this time the correct one. ) to accommodate to mast top. Then sanded the flats on the mast, shaped the hounds and cheeks, and fitted them. Prepared the rubbing paunch with markings. Then fitted all the bindings except the lowest one, which I haven't completed for now... On the bottom two bindings I made the knot at the rear of the mast as they won't be covered by the rubbing paunch. At the rear they will be less prominent. At the moment I'm undecided regarding the lowest binding, between the two possible options. 1. Should I fit it to complete the 16 bindings as per the plan, but this will result the lowest bind quite close to the bottom ring? 2. Or should I leave the lowest binding out, making probably an unauthentic number of binding, however the "look" of the bindings might be more authentic and less disturbing. I'm open for suggestions from the experts around here. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

Today's work... After some consideration I decided to leave the lowest binding out. Rubber paunch slotted and glued in place. Cleats and bibbs fitted. Lower section painted yellow ochre. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

Today's work Prepared 4 pair of battens with little spacers. I found it easier to glue the pieces together first, rather than follow the magazine and fit the two battens to the mast then fit the spacers in between. I was afraid that if the distance is not exactly 2 mm then they will look ugly. Glued to for mast top into its place, then glued the batten sub-assemblies onto the four sides of the mast. Then sanded the slots for threads and glued the guides in place. Then painted the upper section black, including the mast cap, however the cap is not glued in place. Rigging will be fitted to it tomorrow. Also sanded a chamfer to the mast collar. Question... the collar should be painted black or yellow ochre? The magazine says its colour should match with the colour of the main mast collar, however the main mast collar colour not mentioned in Issue 62 where it's prepared. Can anybody confirm it? gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

Today's work: Finishing Issue 68: Eyebolts and blocks rigged to fore mast cap. Fore mast top section rigged. Started on Issue 69: Bad luck of the fore mast hit me again... There supposed to be 3 cross trees and two fore-and-aft rails... but in my magazine it had 4 cross trees and only one rail... Having no other choice I copied the rail onto a suitable size leftover (4x4 mm) strip and carved/sanded to the exact size. Then rails and cross trees glued together, left to dry overnight under some weights. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building!
