Different threads for the same application??? Options

Hi Shipmates,

Is it normal that the different magazines includes slightly different threads even if these supposed to be used for the same application? E.g. natural thread for rigging the blocks to the masts, yards???

I noticed this problem earlier but I thought it's related only a particular magazine, but now I've got the third type of natural thread... Crying

Most of the issues so far had the relatively thin thread (Left on the picture), then I got (I think Issue 65) a thinner and shinier "natural" thread (middle), and now on issue 68 I got thicker one with the same colour as the first one (Right, nearly as thick as the dark brown thread).

Is this variation will carry on further down on the series?
I don't want my ship having various threads. I probably still have some left over from previous issues, but might not be enough if the variation continues...
Probably it wouldn't be disturbing for rigging the blocks, however the thick one might be, but for long threads for fitting the sails I want them being consistent.

Any suggestion?
Shall I start using a custom thread from model shop? But then what about the blocks what I already rigged?

It is perfectly normal for you to receive rigging lines of various thicknesses and colours throughout the course of the build simply because not all rigging lines on a ship are of the same thickness.. The instructions will advise which thickness of rigging line to use as you progress, just ensure you can identify the correct line thickness when needed.. If you study the official build you will see the various thicknesses of line and where they are used.....Cool Cool

Yes, that's correct Laszlo. The other problem I had being a novice at this, was that there never quite seemed to be enough for a particular task, which is frustrating.

My solution was to buy the thread I needed from Cornwall here. It's not expensive and I now have all I need while it remains consistent.

I understand Alan’s point to have different threads to different use (e.g. rigging blocks to yards with very short thread vs. rigging various sails to blocks with various threads) however I’d still prefer the same thread be used to rigging the blocks with very short threads to the yards, masts, etc...
There are some exeption when the magazine particulary says use the thicker brown one for the tripple 7mm block, but when it just calls for natural thread without specified thickness then I’d prefer the same. Also the latest thick natural thread I believe would look ugly on a 4mm single block.

Yes, thickness difference I understand and we need to be careful as we go as they are not all clearly marked up, but not the colour and texture differences.
