Hi all
I'm trying to fit the garboard bow plank but the instructions and picture in the mag are useless. The picture only shows a side view. I have looked at the official build but that picture is only a side view too. I can't tell if it is fitted to the ribs only or overlaps onto the false keel like the one's behind it. Tommick maybe you could post a front view and clarify as the instructions are unclear and it looks as if the two planks join side by side at a 45 degree angle.
Thanks

Hi Wallace! Cool

This link below is to the section from my diary about the garboards, it shows the garboards and the next three planks from them. I have explained how I fitted them, as you are finding it hard the set yours the pictures might help you.

There is a gap between the garboards on both sides down the centre of the keel, as long as the plank goes over the false keel and the top edges are not more then 6mm apart that will be fine, you will need to trim out a 6mm section from the centre later to fit the real keel sections.

Sorry Wallace, the official build is way beyond that point therefore I'm unable to show any different than that already seen.

Nothing further to add without repeating what SoB has noted above.

Thanks S.O.B
much appreciated. Just looked at you build, excellent. Mine is a complete shambles as I have found the planking extremely difficult. The only reason I continued with the build was because of the money I had already spent otherwise it would have been binned ages ago. I though it would be enjoyable but I have found it more like a chore because of the planking. Thanks for help.

Hi Wallace! Cool

Are you planning to paint?

If so don't worry if the planking is a bit rough a layer of wood filler pressed in to any gaps, dips or other problem areas followed by a good sanding will get the hull ready for primer then paint later in the build.

If you wanted a wood finish the first layer is only to get the shape right, thin wood veneer 0.5mm or 0.6mm planks can be shaped then go on top so easy it covers up many mistakes, that's why I think this build should have been done this way in the first place.

Single planking is OK if you have the skill to get it right first time, a lot of first time builders have problems with the planking around the bow and stern, the magazine gave you the basics then left you to it.

So much detail on planking the upper hull, I was amazed at how little there was on the lower hull. This was the part you need good clear instructions. It is a lot of money to chuck away just because you find it’s not clear what you need to do! All the builds will be a little different and that is a problem. We should have had a section on how to spot problems and then how to correct them.

I hope you get there in the end and you feel happier about your build soon the hard part is nearly done now and thing are getting explained better with more detail.

Just think if only there was a person in your area that could have shown you how to get going you would have had an easier time of it.

Keep your chin up mate!

Thanks for that S.O.B. I will percevier, I never give up easily.
I learn more practically than I do from reading, but deag advertised this build as suitable for the beginner, which I think has been far from truthful, otherwise I would never have started it. It would have been helpful for me to bee shown by someone in my area, but hey, never mind I will get there in the end. Once again thanks for your help, much appreciated.
