Issue 71 completed: Both studdingsail booms tapered with my usual well working method. The they were painted and fitted to the fore yard assembly. Now it's completed. Started to work on Issue 72: Faced with a problem immediately, the dowel for the fore topmast yard is bent due to a knot in the wood. I will give a go with the tapering to see if it makes better, however I might end up to go to the local DIY shop and buy a straight 5mm diameter strip. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Hello Shipmates, I managed to buy a 6 mm dowel to replace the bent one however I found only pine, but not hardwood. Do you think the pine is also suitable for the yards? Not too soft? Hi Laszlo, the yards will not be under a lot of stress with the rigging and as you are painting them I do not see pine causing you any real issues. I would prefer to use walnut though...  .. I get my replacements materials from here most of the time..... http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/

Regards Alan Hi Alan, Thanks for the reply, I know this website, I just didn't wanted to order one piece of dowel from them. Do you know that what wood is actually used for the various parts in the DeAgostini kit? They also don't quite look hardwood, more like pine. Happy building! Most of the wood supplied is Birch, Ply, basswood, boxwood & some Walnut. Cheers Alan

Started Issue 72: The dowels for the main and fore top yards tapered to the required level, again, using my well working method with a pillar drill. The fore top yard dowel is the replacement pine dowel. It looks/feels OK, it's not more bendy as the original one. By the way... Hello All, Thank you for all the positive comments, it means a lot to a first time builder from the experts. To celebrate the new year some more work done on Issue 72: - Missing filler strips added and the octagons chamfered and sanded smooth. - Slings and bindings added... by the way has anyone noted that there is an error on the fore topsail yard plan? It's not showing three bindings on the left hand side. - Eight footrope supports made from thread, replacing the brass wire supplied in the kit. - Footrope supports added to the yards - Both yards painted black gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building!
