Issue 65 give's you the option to have Running or Standing rigging on your model, (with or without Sails) where the rigging is different to both versions.
A complete sail set will be provided for the model, but some builders may prefer to leave them off, to display the details of the standing rigging which is very much as Victory appears today. This 'bare-spars' option also makes it easier to keep the model clean, particularly if it will not be displayed in a case. Also, because the model is not actually on the high sea's, the sails of a model often look lifeless.
The reason you need to make this choice at issue 65 is that some of the blocks used for the Running rigging (with sails) are only required if you intend to attach sails to the yards.
If you decide to build the Standing version (without sails), you can omit most of the blocks. The blocks that must be fitted to the 'bare-spars' (Standing) version, are indicated by a Star on the mast plans.
You also have a choice of natural finish or paint - For the natural version, stain the centre of the yard dark walnut, and the ends dark oak. On the painted version, paint everything but the blocks and their ties black.
The Official Diary build - Will follow the route of 'no sails' & Standing rigging, and will be the painted version.
The magazine steps will follow the route of 'with sails' & Running rigging, and will provide finish information for both the natural and painted version.

Good question, though I think the magazine will only cover as per the model shown in advertising which is the ship at full sail, plus the option for no sails as mentioned, but I'll ask the question.

hi all,the question of furled sails and the rigging, you will need to rig almost as for full sail, the ropes that are hanging from the sails are used to tie the sail in the rolled position, the running rigging is still the same. Well it gives you food for thought and time to decide how you want your model to look, which is a personal thing.
The next update should be info about coppering - Watch this ModelSpace!

Think ill be leaving them of on this one as ive no case to protect from dust, and bounty collected an awful amount of dust not only on the sails but on the deck, also and it was very difficult to clean...very tricky.

Within the constraints of being a model, it is very detailed!

On page 195 there is a drawing of furled sails. I will be building my Victory with sails some furled and some full I like this comment from the book "A model of a sailing ship without sails looks naked. It sits there on its display stand or in its case looking to all the world like a skeleton." Still each to his own and I look forward to seeing everybodies finished "Victories" First Build HMS Victory and HMS Endeavour Also Krick steam boat "Victoria" Cheers Ivan (Ordinary Seaman) http://www.old-glossop.com

Thanks Son of Bulwark.
Lot of info in your links and food for thought. Luck I have some time to ponder the different options as I have just started to plank the bottom half of the hull.
Happy building

Hi All
The magazine will only give instructions for open sails, with instructions on what to omit for the ‘bare spars’ option. Furled sails are difficult to represent on a model as the cloth used is a lot thicker than scale. Therefore simply furling the sails supplied will not look very realistic.
Thanks Admin

Unless you follow this route:) part furled part full sail, great idea that means you can still show off the decking. (I did ask permission to use these pictures)

thank you admin for that info, but????when you furl sails with normal thickness you reduce the drop so that the sail when furled look normal.but I do understand that you have a limited amount of instruction for printing, but at least thier are two choices already. btw can you please unlock my account as I had my caplock on by mistake and tried 3 times hence the locking.many thanks.karl xxxxx Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/
