Hello All, I'm confused now...  I just tried the mizzen mast into it's position in the hull and the intended deck line, as directly measured from the plan (not the written dimension), it's now sitting 3mm below the actual poop deck surface.  This 3mm is exactly the difference between the written dimensions and the "direct-measurement" I know that everybody said, including the editorial comment from Tomick, that we should follow the direct measurement method instead of go for the written dimensions but now I'm not sure that it was the good choice. Specially for the mizzen mast where the mast collar is triple thick compared to the other masts. Now, again, my lower binding seems a bit too close to the poop deck surface. I had similar issue on the fore mast where the inaccuracy of the plan caused to ignore and not fit the lowest binding, otherwise it would be unrealistically close to the mast collar. With all my respect to the experts, I now wish I was follow the written dimensions... well... it doesn't matter now, but I still will build up the bottom of the mizzen mast to bring the intended line back to the actual deck surface. Didn`t you put your mast dowel into the hull and mark your very own deckline before doing all the shaping?
I think every model has small variations in deck-height so the instructors can`t exactly know how far the dowel goes into the hull.
But anyways you solved the Problem - so no damage done!Greetings,

But anyways you solved the Problem - so no damage done! Hello Walter, No I didn’t, for the other two masts the line from the plan exactly matched with the deck line on the model. Also the deck line vs. dowel resting point inside the hull is defined by the laser cut frames, assembled on the very early stages. The poop deck is resting on the frames as well as the dowel. Therefore, if the plan would be correct also assuming that the laser cut was precise, then there shouldn’t be 3mm difference... and if I would have followed the written dimensions then they would match. Anyhow, the deck line is sorted, however I believe that in overall my mizzen mast will be 10-15 mm shorter once fully assembled compared to the correct 1:84 scale. But maybe I’m wrong and everybody else is doing it right.  If I would know the height of the mizzen mast above the poop deck on the real ship it could be easily checked. Happy building! Yesterday I made a quick calculation on the DeAgostini plan. The difference between the given dimensions and the graphics dimensions is 20mm after the mast is fully assembled (lower + top + topgallant). I now stopped my build and ordered some 8mm dowel from Cornwall Model Shop. I’m happy to re-start the lower mizzen mast if the calculation show that it’s currently too short. Happy building! Obviously the 48 cm isn’t the real ship mizzen mast total heigh unless you made a typo error and you meant 48 meters. If you meant 48 cm then in what scale? Happy building! Hello Walter, Thanks to confirm. Here are my findings: From the written dimensions total mast height from poop deck level to the top (ignoring the bead on top): 77 + 100 + 52 + 119 + 23 + 89 + 57 = 517 mm Same sections from the “direct-measurement”: 75 + 97 + 50.5 + 115.5 + 22.5 + 86.5 + 55.5 = 502.5 mm Taking your book as an official info the “direct-measurement” value is the closer one to the mentioned 480 mm. So the editorial comment was correct, we should ignore the written dimensions and take direct measurement from the plan. My concern was not proven so now I’m happy to carry on building. Looking very nice, Laszlo!
If you look at my build you will see that there are many differences between the original plans of the real ship and the official instructions.
And most of the measurements don`t exactly match.

Today work on the mizzen mast: - mast cap dressed with eyelets and rigging blocks - cross trees assembled - hand mast assembled and painted - rope guide made - mizzen topmast carved, tapered, octagonal section added, bottom part painted black, ready to assemble tomorrow. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Quite productive day today working on mizzen mast: - mast cap, top mast, hand mast and rope guide assembled to the mast top - cross trees fitted to top mast - topgallant mast carved, tapered - octagonal section added - topgallant mast and mast cap fitted to the mase assembly and all painted black. With this the mizzen mast now fully assembled, only the dressing with rigging blocks left for tomorrow. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building!
