Now finished adding the little diamond shaped 'fish plates' to the second half of the bomb bay (that was soooo monotonous!), so on with some other details now. Will add photos in the next few days.

Hello all,
Managed to finish adding the little diamond 'fish plates' to the second half of the bomb bay. I'm glad that's over, there was about 250 of the little blighters to make and fit in total!
I've added a length of twin PE cables to the roof in the corner where it meets the port sidewall which can just about be seen in the last two photos below. The fore and aft bulkheads will need some scratch built and PE detail added and I will be remaking the twin hydraulic rams that operate the bomb bay doors at some point, but more on that in another update. For now I've just drilled out the two portholes that are solidly moulded into the rear bulkhead. These are observation windows for the crew to look into the bomb bay, so should be clear not solid. I will leave the holes as just drilled out for now and once the bay has been painted I will just run some Microscale 'Kristal Klear' or similar into the hole to simulate the glass.
I've also started making up the PE bomb racks from the Eduard set and I've added some small slivers of styrene rod to the feet that clamp onto the bombs as the PE parts don't really show these within their shape. The one rack that I've completed can be seen below and also where it fits into the bomb bay, though it's only loosely placed for now to show how it will look, I'll fix it permanently when the rest go in place so that I can space them more accurately. There are 16 of these to make up in total so just another 15 to go now .... I could be gone for some time!

Kev Very nice work and i am learning something along the way. Was wondering what those holes were and now you mention they are windows for the crew to view the bomb bay that makes sense. Happy Modelling

I aim to have the bomb bay finished by somewhere around the end of this month Tom, then it's on to the cockpit and interior, which I'm looking forward to - lots of lovely detail in there!

Hello all,
Apologies to all who are following my build and are waiting for the next update, I have just worked 10 straight days without a break and which left me with very little, if any, modelling time but I will be continuing with the bomb bay over this weekend so another update will be coming soon! I've also ordered some aftermarket 500lb, 250lb and 4000lb 'Cookie' bombs to furnish my upgraded bomb bay, since the kit items aren't very good and need upgrading to match the bay.
Watch this space!

Fantastic work on the bomb bay and I love the etch bomb holders, I'll have to remember those whenever I get around to building my Lanc.

Those bomb racks are beautiful bits of PE design and take a bit of careful folding, though looking at many of my reference photos, I don't think they are strictly accurate with those long tails either side of the bomb clamps? I may have to cut those racks down in size, but more of that in my next update - which should be along in the next day or two.

Hello all,
A small update for you. I have done more than the photos show below, but not ready to show it all yet until I've reached a certain stage. I have built seven more of the elaborate bomb racks with the long tails but the vast majority of reference photos that I've found show the racks as being shorter affairs without the long tails. The only photos I've found with them fitted to a Lancaster bomb bay appear to belong to the Canadian Heritage Lancaster, so I'm probably going to cut them all down to size by removing the tails. The first photo below shows an example of the fully built rack as provided by Eduard with a cut-down version below it which matches more closely what I've seen in wartime photos. I suspect Eduard didn't research fully and maybe just copied what is on the Canadian machine? Because I need to convert the racks that I've already built, I have decided to just show what was to be the next stage in the bomb bay conversion from the kit offering.
Using a mix of stretched sprue and various other bits and bobs of wire, I have scratchbuilt something that loosely suggests the multitude of pipes and cables that run along the sides of the bomb bay as seen in my reference photos. The retaining brackets on the starboard side are simply thin strips of Tamiya masking tape glued into place with CA glue. Once painted they should resemble small brackets/retaining plates. I will also use paint to suggest various pipe unions/connections along the length of some of the pipes to break them up a little?
I have also fitted more of the Eduard etched parts to the central plate in the bomb bay which replicate the carrier frame for the 4000lb 'Cookie' bomb. Some of the etch parts were just way too small and flat (2D) when they should be bigger and more tubular, such as the bottle screws (white sprue) and the bracing/retaining bars (amber sprue). I think the scratchbuilt parts look better than the etched parts would have done.
I have also received from the postie some replacement 500lb, 250lb and 4000lb 'Cookie' bombs, which I have actually started building but won't show them until later in the build. They are a vast improvement over the kit offerings which were too big and long in the case of the 500lb bombs and too small and skinny with the 4000lb 'Cookie'. I needed to order four packs of the 500lb bombs (four bombs per pack) to give me enough to fill the bomb bay. The two 250lb bombs may not be used but I'll decide later on which load I'll use. The aftermarket 'Cookie' bombs aren't strictly correct being Mk.I bombs, which had a conical nose whereas the correct bombs should be Mk.III's with a more flat/slightly domed front end, but I couldn't find any aftermarket examples to purchase so I've converted the Mk.I bomb which I will show at a later date.
So, not a lot to show at the moment even though I have been quite busy working on this!
