Hello, I'm just about half way through nailing down the lower gun deck when I noticed that it seems off centre at the stern. The stern post is almost touching one side of the deck with a gap of about 3mm on the other, even though I was sure I was centered on the top of the keel.
Just wondering how crucial this is and whether I need to unpin the stern deck panels and start them again. And if so, how do I get the pins out? BigGrin

Hi Mattsr,

Looking at your pic I would say you have an alignment problem and should be rectified before going any further. The most critical part in building these kind of ships is to ensure the keel, ribs and deck are perfectly aligned otherwise you could very well run into more serious problems further into the build.

The keel has to be perfectly straight, perfectly upright and set within a build jig. The ribs need to be central within each of the keel slots, set at 90 degrees to the keel and perfectly level. Your pic initially indicates to me a possible bend in the keel but won't know until the deck has been removed and everything double checked. A small flat headed screwdriver and long nosed pliers may help in the careful removal of the pins.

Perhaps you could take some additional pics, from the bow looking straight down the deck to the stern. The stern looking down to the bow and if possible one from above looking straight down showing the whole of the ship. Your pics should be resized so they are no larger than 150kb before posting so they show on your diary rather than a download.

Once we see the pics then perhaps we can be a little more certain.

Hope this helps..

Regards

Alan

Hello Gandale and thankyou for your reply. I'm afraid I don't know how to resize the photos so I hope you will bear with me.

To my inexpert eye, all looks straight and true apart from the rear deck panels. I think perhaps I have just fitted them off-centre and for some reason failed to pick that up until I was half way through pinning. 🤔 See what you think. Thanks again for your advice.

Hi Mattsr, have had a look at your pics so thanks for posting them up.... Apart from what you have already mentioned I'm not seeing anything major however, only you can determine whether everything is straight and true. I would be looking to remove the two stern deck panels to check to be sure. I would be uncomfortable making assumptions that everything is aligned properly only to find a problem later. As said previously, alignment at this early stage of the build is critical, anything out of true may cause problems later in the build. Also, make sure you haven't inadvertently induced a slight twist to the keel, not easy to determine this due to the angle the photo's have been taken.

Thanks again for your advice. I have removed the rear deck panels as you suggested and as I was doing so could see that the starboard panel was off centre. I have refitted them without nailing and have found that they do line up correctly as long as I don't make the silly mistake I made last time! Flapper I'll repin them tomorrow afternoon and then all should be well! BigGrin
