Hi all It is with great regret I am withdrawing this build from the 2018 BOTY competition
This year the rules have changed slightly to previous years and I have missed it, previously you were not allowed to post your build until 1st January, This year the rules state you must start your build until 1st January. I started my Build in November but did not post until after January. previously that would have been ok this year it breaks the rules.
Its a genuine mistake on my behalf I have not intended to deceive, indeed I started the build before the rules were posted.
I have now been made aware of the rules and that I have inadvertently broken them. so I am with drawing from this years competition. However the Diary will remain and I will continue the build as planned and I do hope that those of you who have been following the build will continue to follow and support my progress of this very special kit.

Hull Construction part 6. Grab Handels.
Earlier in the build we removed the moulded on grab Handels from the hull. As the build progresses down the hull these need to be replaced with etch ones.
the folding of etch grab Handels is one of the trickiest tasks in the etch building world, a tiny tab at each end needs folding up to create a surface to apply adhesive to.
My method of making this task much easier is to do the folding while the part is still on the etch tree., it is much easier to do this as the part is kept in place. I have an old blade with the point snapped off that I use to flick the ends up. I only do the number needed for each section.
the Handels are then removed after folding.
placing the Handels is done simply with Tweezers and dating the ends of the part in thin CA. the parts are placed using a steady hand!

Hull Construction part 7. Walkways.
With one side of the hull complete in terms of scuttles, Handels, gun shutters and davits, I decided to add the walkways. Etch walkways are provided with the kit and with the MK1 set. the kit version has arms attached that need to be folded down to meet the hull, the MK1 set has separate triangular brackets.
The walkways come in 3 parts with a good number of support brackets to be attached underneath. It was only once I checked the fit that I realised that the lower gun shutter doors fouled the walkway and had to be removed, it was at this point I had the opportunity to correct the orientation of a couple of the doors
I decided it made sense to add the walkways to both sides before adding the other etch so as to mount the gun shutters correctly first time on the other side.
I also noticed an error in the kit at this point one of the coaling shoots, a long rectangular bulge on the hull side, is not accounted for by the etch, ether set!, so a slot needed to be cut in with a razor saw.
Using medium CA it was possible to position the walkways and allow them to set in pace before the long task of adding all the brackets. Quite time consuming but the finish is much better than the kit parts and the effort is will worth it.

That looks really good. You have certainly set yourself a mammoth task with all that etch but it makes such a nice improvement to the model. Hope it continues well. Happy Modelling

Hull Construction part 8.
With the scuttles, grab Handels, davits, gun shutters and walkways in place there is a small handful of od bits to be added before the hull can be painted.
At the Bow there are two anchor chain guides, I had etch replacements but when comparing them to the kit parts and the real ship they looked a little to thin to me, so I went with the kit parts which are perhaps a little over size but I prefer the 'beefy' look. there are also a couple of parts that attach at the deck line, no idea what they are?!
There is a lot more going on at the stern. the plastic mounts that protrude from the hull are for stern anchors. some etch brackets were added which are for the torpedo net booms, the rest will be added later.
I will apologise for the picture quality at this point my DSLR was out of action and was using my iPhone, which just does not have the pixel count to get really good definition on 2mm parts close up.
The hull had stern gallery doors moulded on, I sanded these off and filled the hull before adding etch ones. With a bit of planning before the deck goes in it would be possible to put a false deck in to allow the ship to be modelled with the doors open, which I think would look great. maybe on the next one  
The kit comes with an etch stern gallery deck and there is one supplied in the MK1 set. The MK1 had finer detail of the wooden deck hatch pattern so went with that one. medium CA was used for this job once set the support brackets were folded under and thin CA used to fix them in place.
That completes the hull build as far as can be done prior to painting.

Hull Construction part 8. PaintingI have used two primers for the hull of this build. The deck was primed using Tamiya fine white rattle can, photo 1. The Turret barbet housings will be a very pale grey so wanted to use a light primer. the outer hull was primed with Halfords grey, photo 2.
Just prior to Christmas I purchased a new respirator, I have to say this 3M respirator is very comfortable and easy to put on and take of with one hand. its the best respirator I have owned and you can get different filters for different dusts and vapours, would recommend it. Photo 3.
I decided to go with my Iwata eclipse airbrush for the hull painting (the middle one in photo 4). I normally use the Paasche VL (one on the right) for big jobs, it was my first airbrush and is not as sensitive or as controllable as the Iwata but suits big coverage jobs, however I managed to thread my adaptor ring on the there way regulator, so cannot use it until I replace the part. so it did take me a bit longer as I don't have as big needles for the Iwata. The Badger Xtreme Patriot 105 on the left I only use for very fine detail, its special designed for that use but the strip down and clean is more difficult than the Iwata, so only use when the job dictates.
As the hull colour is going to be black I dot not go with my normal Hull red and chose a lighter shade to lighten the overall look and give a bit more contrast. Photo 5. two coats were applied, photo 6, and allowed to dry overnight before being masked off to do the upper hull, photo7.
So the hull is black only it is not because I find black to dark for large hulls, detail disappears in the darkness of it all. so I have gone with tyre black, photo 8, which is a satin extreme dark grey. this shows of all that detail wonderfully and gives the hull a nice industrial iron look. not only are the hull sides done in the tyre black so are the deck fittings at the bow and stern. some of the moulded on deck fittings were removed prior ti fitting the deck to allow for replacement etch, which is why there is a small hole in the deck.

Hull construction part 9. Glazing scuttles/life belt cage.With the hull painting dry I was able to glaze the scuttles, this s done using microscope Kristal Kleer

I use a cocktail stick and dip it in the solution then rub it around the scuttle so all the inner edge is noted finally bringing the solution to the middle to creat a film across the whole opening.
As the Kristal leer dries the cloudiness clears leaving a clear glazed scuttle.
There are two life belts to be added to the hull. they were painted off white first then glued in place with medium CA. once dry the red was added.
