Today's work: - mizzen mast fully dressed with rigging blocks - started to carve the cross jack yard centre section for the octagon Also painted the belaying pins for the mizzen mast but faced with problem and I might seek your advice. I used metal primer and black metal paint (both from the admiralty paint set provided for the kit) on them however it's easily peeling off when I insert the pins into the holes on the collar. I could work around the problem with inserting them first and then paint, but I was advised 10-15 posts ago not to glue them in place yet because I might need to remove them later on during rigging. The other solution would be to make the 1.3mm holes bigger not to scrape the paint off when they're inserted but then the pins would be loose. Have you got any other suggestions, e.g. paint type? gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

In the last couple of days I carried on working on the remaining yards: - octagonal section fitted to the cross jack yard - ends tapered with my well working pillar drill method - slings, bindings and footrope supports added - yard painted black and dressed with rigging blocks - central octagonal section marked on the mizzen top and topgallant yards As the mizzen mast was completed I test fitted all the masts to the hull... Looks awesome, as a first time builder I'm very happy with the result so far. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! I didn't actually glued/pinned the hull planking into the balsa wood (only into the frames) but these fillers helped me during the sanding/shaping the hull prior planking to get it into the correct shape. The balsa blocks fit in between the frame gaps, you don't need to cut anything out from the frames. You just cut a rectangular piece to fit between two frames, glue it there and then sand off the excess corner and shape in together with the frames. I hope it helps. Happy building! Today's work on Issue 81: - driver boom and gaff tapered - jaws and braket fitted - both painted black - fully dressed with rigging blocks Now I finished all the masts, yards (except the bow sprit) and I'll go back to the skipped issues/steps and start working on the hull from Issue 66, painting the hull... gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Today I haven’t actually worked on the ship but made an adjustable stand using some leftover timber from previous DIY projects. The work for the upcoming weeks/months will be on the sides of the hull. For easy access it’s better when the hull is tilted. Fleece material ordered to cover the surfaces to protect the hull from being scratched. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Great job with your build and I like the idea of the stand, it should make working on the sides a lot easier.

Great idea with the stand - but in your pictures it looks very dangerous to me!
In the tilted position too much weight on the front side would make the whole thing tip over and thus catapulting the model to the ground.
Sorry, this was my first thought - of course you have thought of that and i dont`t have to warn you!Greetings, Walter

Hello All, Thanks for the good comments about my stand, much appreciated. Regarding Walter's (DaDokta) comment, yes, it looks dangerous but the "tip over point" is still far away, actually it still can be tilted bit more vertical and still safely tilted. I'll also keep it in the tilted position only when I'm actually working on it. For storage it kept vertically (3rd picture). The legs at the back and front are adjustable (rotate), to provide easy access to the part/area where I'll work on it. Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

Today the fleece material arrived and fixed to the stand with PVA glue. Now I can carry on working on the hull without risking it to get scratched. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section

The scary task started... painting the hull, Issue 66. First I marked the rough position waterline. Then painted a black stripe. As advised by the magazine I made the "edges" of the stripe feathered to avoid the stripe being visible when it's painted with the next layers. Then re-drawn the waterline on top of the black paint. After it dried, of course. Marking the waterline wasn't that easy because the height of it has 2 mm difference between left and right hand side due to slightly different position of the whales. So I had to cheat on both sides to "bend" the waterline up/down towards the stern/bow to make sure they meet at the front/rear. Then I used 2 mm wide masking tape all around the hull. It was very tricky where the waterline crosses the bottom of the lower whale, there is a step. It took a while but hopefully the step will look OK when painted, however I might need to correct it with fine brush, the masking tape doesn't wanted to stick on the edge of the whale. Then I used a 6mm tape half way covering the previous tape to increase the masked area. I nicely managed to bring the waterlines together at the bow/stern. Tomorrow I'll paint the hull copper. gingerale75 attached the following image(s): Happy building! Laszlo Finished builds: HMS Victory, HMS Victory Cross-Section
