Ok a wet day today in sunny Devon Laugh so I spent 4 hours on the project and will now need to win back some brownie points indoors.
Spent around the 2 1/2 hours I thought sculpting the the body shaping and smoothing the contours Fig 1
Having learnt the lessons from the last buildI then sealed it in pva Fig 2 once dry a small pin located in the centre of the neck, this will locate and secrete neck and head Fig 4

Believe it or not this is all the easy bit the hard part starts now:

Start covering the body building the detail and texturing

Scale the wings and draw the template so I can cut and shape them

This is even before I figure out how to texture them or fix the dragonfly wings, so a lot to figure outland let the fun begin.

The next job is to blend the neck with the body.

Below is a couple images on how the neck is blended into the body here you can see the first base layer of detail for the nostrils. This process will carry on all over the body forming the base for what goes on next allowing for the finishing detail and texturing.

The last picture shows the additional detail added to the head with the unusual tri beak. All the life on pandora has one unusual commonality 3, navi have 3 fingers, banshee and toruk 3 wings 3 claws, viper wolves 3 legs and so on.

Although I can do some cleaning up and add additional detail because I cannot use wet and dry as it would remove detail I need to get it as close to where I want it with just minimal clean up.
Once this is dry I can add the additional nostril detail.

Thanks for all the comments, tonights update is wings.
Fig 1 scale off and produce a card cut out as the template so I ca put it against the body.

How to build the wing big and ridged enough to support the other 3 dragonfly wings it must hold later !! so the idea is take 1mm plastic card and cut a left and right wing. Fig 2 I ned to get a double bend in the wing first along its length then along the tip width axis.
The best way to do this is by using the flame frame a gas cooking ring and the rest is by feel, then rapidly cool under the tap.
Fig 3 is a separate 1mm half length under wing, again heat it and press to the full length to get a good fit.

Fig 4 using copious amounts of liquid poly and and clamps set both wings and patience and aloud them to harden

Fig 5 here you can see both wings laid flat with the body showing the size of them which is scary as there is still the others to go on the end.

Ok so what have I been up to well legs is the answer, but first an apology got so carried away in the past few weeks that I forgot to take pictures of the covered body though its not the finished layer.

So the process I used was the following:
1 carve a left and right thigh from 18mm mdf using chisel and dremel to shape them.
2 here is the left and right thighs
3 next I used 3mm brass rod scaling the rest of the leg and its triple bends which was a challenge to get length and additional for going into the base.

ok the biggest issue has always been trying to get milliput to set around metal rod as it keeps moving, so I developed a new technique. Take some string landcover it in PVA glue then wrapping it around the rod from the bottom up and increased layers at the top.
4 shows legs covered and hardened.
5 I add some illicit around the tops to anchor them in place.
6 regarding fixing to the body I i shaped them to the body and fixed using a pan head screw but also a step pin to stop any rotation.

Ok so its been a few weeks and a couple of snow days down south so time for an update.

"Wings" how hard can it be Laugh
The first picture (fig 1) shows a dry fit of the main wings on the back they just need a little alignment before final fixing so on to the sub wings which are located at the rear and have the added feature of a tail.
Again I used a paper template and cut 2 x1.5 mm plasticard wings and tapered the edges fig 2-3 the big question was how to make them look leathery like a bats wing?
Milliput and texture? what to do? the answer was simple tissue paper. PVA glue on the wing surface lay issue paper over it and slightly scrunch it up, I repeated this 3 times on each surface as shown in fig 4 let this dry and seal the surface with PVA.
