Its going to be a very different looking bomb bay from the standard kit, don't envy you doing the fiddly bomb rack etch looks great though. Al

Thanks Phil, Al and Ian for looking in and your nice comments, very much appreciated as always.
I am further along the build of the bomb bay than that which has been posted so far. There is light at the end of the tunnel, so hopefully should be moving on to the cockpit/interior quite soon, which should be less involved and quicker than the bomb bay conversion has been.
Thanks all for looking in on my build so far.

You might find this link useful to configure a bomb bay of your choosing with what you have... http://www.lancaster-arc...com/lanc_bomb_loads.htm

Thanks for that Tom, very useful.
I have several reference books which detail the various bomb load configurations that were officially carried, but your link seems to be a little clearer which does help, so thanks again.
I will probably be going with something along the lines of the one below which is from your site ... :
Carpet Bombing of Tactical Targets Bomber Command Executive Codeword: "No-BALL" (for V1 sites)
Target Type: V1 and radar sites, armour concentrations. 1 x 4,000 lb HC, impact fused bomb (Cookie) and up to 18 x 500 lb MC or GP bombs, short-finned with mixed instantaneous and delay fusing.
.... though I will probably only be loading 12 x 500lb GP bombs (two rows of three at the front and same at the rear), plus the 4000lb 'Cookie' in the middle. May also add the 2 x 250lb bombs that I have (one either side of the 'Cookie'), which is shown in one of my books. I suppose any load configuration was open to slight variations depending on the target so I don't think it would be too unlikely a load?
Thanks for the help.

Hello all,
Moving on with the bomb bay conversion.
I have built all twelve of the 500lb G.P. bombs, the two 250lb bombs and the 4000lb HC 'Cookie' bomb. These aftermarket bombs are amazingly good and a vast improvement on the kit offerings. The 500lb bombs each have no less than eight parts to them plus decals for the markings. The 250lb bombs have ten parts and the 4000lb 'Cookie' just two parts but I've had to convert what is supplied as a Mk.I bomb into a Mk.II/III since I haven't been able to find an aftermarket offering for the later marks and really, the early Mk.Is were pretty much only carried by the early bombers like the Wellington? My Lancaster is being depicted as a late war machine, so I had to furnish it with a later mark 'Cookie'. In the photos below you can see that the Mk.I bomb had a conical nose with a rim around the edge, whereas the Mk.II/III had a more domed nose with a simple drum tail to aid stability? It was just a simple case of sanding down the cone and rim to a dome shape, adding the three fusing connections and then adding a shim of thin plastic card around the rear half of the body to leave a rim at the rear. The rear half of the resin bomb was smaller in diameter which is correct for the Mk.I but too small for the later bomb but everything was left nice and flush after the plastic card shim was added. I also added a small round plate centrally on the rear face and scribed some rivet holes.
Moving back to the actual bomb bay, I've now permanently glued all of the bomb racks in place after removing the long tails (as I discussed in my last post), and I've also added lengths of wire to one end of each of the racks to simulate some electrical wiring seen in my reference photos which are to do with operating the release mechanisms. the lengths of white square section plastic strip, which can be seen in the central section of the bay represent some conduit channels which the wiring runs through. They'll all blend in when the bay is painted black later. I've also added the PE brass base unit for the fusing of the 4000lb 'Cookie' which can be seen just in front of the bomb in the photos that show the bombs in place on their racks (the box like object with three wires sticking up). The bombs have only been loosely placed in the bay for now to see what it all looks like, so may not look dead parallel just now. Once the bay and the individual bombs have all been painted they will be permanently fixed in place. There are fusing propellers to be added to the noses of the 500lb GP bombs but I've deliberately left them off for now to facilitate placing a cocktail stick in the hole to allow ease of painting the bodies. The fusing propellers will be added later after painting and decaling of the bombs is finished.
That just about completes the detailing of the bomb bay, it's been a lot of work, though very much worth it as the new bay is a vast improvement on what the kit had offered! Next job is to prime and paint everything then tape the bomb bay doors shut over it all for protection whilst I get started on the cockpit and other fuselage internals.
Thanks for looking in on my build, all comments and criticisms welcomed.

Thanks Jase, Phil, Andy, Graeme and Mark, lovely to get such nice comments from you, it makes all of that effort on the detail so worthwhile.
I intend to have this finished by the deadline Jase, I'm pretty much on schedule and the most time consuming part of the build is now behind me so the pace should pick up a bit from here onwards. Really enjoying this build and have already made a start on the cockpit!

Hello all,
I've chomped my way through a few frets of Eduard etch and managed to get quite a bit of interior work done. I'm not going to go into massive detail here about what I've done, I will just let the photos do the talking for now with a few brief notes where needed.
The standard kit parts for the instrument panel and control column end up too close (almost touching in fact) when they are glued in their respective locations so I had to slice off the moulding of the rubber boot at the foot of the column and will re-glue it, with the column, in an appropriate position when everything else is in place. The process can be seen in the first few photos below.
Several enhancements to parts were made and some parts were scratchbuilt including a small pump down in the bomb aimers position along with some rails made from fuse wire and also some parts on the flight engineers' seat which is fitted in the 'down' position in the kit but I've re-built it in the 'folded' position for my model. There is still a bit more etch to fit into the interior, mostly of the 'pre-painted' instrument panel type, which will be fitted after the interior is painted black and some moulded detail has been scraped away in the relevant places to prepare for this. There is also some more scratchbuilding to be done, especially around the navigators' station.
The last few shots show all of the interior parts that have been made so far, loosely assembled with the aid of white tack in order to give an idea of where this is going, so please excuse any misalignments or 'wonky' parts for now they will be glued permanently later!
Thanks for looking, all comments or criticisms are welcomed. Sorry about the large number of photos in this post!
P.S. - I am going into hospital for an operation early Thursday morning, which is bit of a nuisance, but there IS an upside to it - I've been told it will be at least an eight week recovery before I can return to work, so this build will get a lot of attention over the next two months. What else can I do whilst I'm stuck at home and have to take it easy eh?!
