Hi all,
I have decided to make an 'out of the box' build of the the 1/60 Sultan Arab Dhow. Ordered last Friday, and package arrived today BigGrin. Can't complain about delivery times there.Cool

So, for today, i just wanted to open the box and take a peak at the contents. To gauge the quality of the kit as it were. Well i am pleased to report that it really does look like a quality kit! Well packaged, so no loose parts flying around, and good quality woods used (it's DOUBLE PLANKED!!!).

The frames are made from plywood, as is the decks. However, the hull formers are made from Sapeli, and the stern deck 'embellishments' are walnut. The second planking is also dark sepeli hardwood. It also has cloth sails, with cotton rigging, pre-formed anchors and deck barrels.

The instruction booklet is in full colour easily followed stages,in multiple languages.

All in all a very impressive little (470mm long) boat, that i think will be a joy to build.

Purchase and build details can be found on the Modelspace website here:

Gray

I built this Model a while ago now and did enjoy it. The model is also available through this forum and the build instructions are available as a PDF download on the forum site should you need them.

The only issue I had was with the rigging instruction, still the standard instructions of read twice build once applies.

Hope you enjoy this build

Gil

thanks for looking in and your comments.
While waiting for some etch to dry, i thought i would make a start on my Sultan dhow build.

After carefully removing the the ribs and checking their fit, i loosely inserted them in order on the false keel without gluing.
Next the 2 bow strengtheners were glued in place, followed by the stern, making sure the tops of the strengtheners are in line with the top of the keel.

Next i fitted the main deck. Because the ribs were not glued, this made that particular task very easy. Using a pin pusher, i tacked the deck to the false keel along a line from bow to stern. The aft deck was fitted in the same manner. The stern bulkhead was a tight fit between the deck and rib ten, so once in place i watered down the glue and used capillary action to get the adhesive between the mating parts. The bow deck is fitted using the same gluing method, leaving a 10mm gap between the decks.Part 21, where the masts will sit is added next.

That's it for today's update. I hope you enjoyed it..
