Hi All, A small update today. I assembled the gratings and their frame. I decided to solder the brass components, simply for practice. Supergluing them would have sufficed. The timber parts of the frame are very thin and flimsy. Once glued I put some weight on to hold them down. Once dry they were primed and painted matt Black. I’ll do some dry-brushing to weather them at a later stage. Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! Hi All, A decent update this time Just a note to anybody following my build with the intention of building your own Pearl. I am not following the instructions as they are presented in each issue. As I have all the parts, I jump around and try to complete similar processes in one go. I will try to elaborate where I have deviated, but please forgive me when I do not. Issue 31 & 32 have us fitting parts 99 & 100, I’m leaving them off until I have completed the planking – they are just asking to be snapped off!!! A note on the planking. It is not mentioned in the instructions, but an electric plank bender really makes life easier. I made mine using an old soldering iron with a socket attached to the tip. Once again thanks to Gordon for his advice on turning a soldering iron into a plank bender. I had on old offcut piece of Kiaat that became the former. My planking process is roughly as follows: chamfer the edge with a small Box Plane if necessary, test fit, trim and sand, soak in water for a couple of minutes, place the plank over the desired radii and gently form the curve by running the soldering iron over the strip. (I assume that the heat from the soldering iron boils the water which intern creates the steam required to soften the fibres enough to allow them to be bent without braking) http://forum.model-space...spx?g=posts&t=23060
I use white glue to glue the strips down and therefore don’t wait for them to dry. The advantage of this is that the damp planks are much easier to manipulate. Further consideration is the planking sequence in the instructions. They tell us to plank the starboard side and then in the next issue, the port side. This goes against everything I have ever read regarding planking. In order to prevent the hull warping, planking should alternate between port and starboard. Down to business. Parts 78 and 81 must be scored and bent to take the shape of the rib, Part 14. Started with the first three rows on both upper & lower planks. I stained the planks that will be visible between the decks. I also drilled hole through the keel for wires. Well, a lot said and only 3 rows of planking - but its a start. Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl.
