A new air show held at the home of the Red Arrows will not be returning in 2018 after it made a loss.

Scampton Airshow, held for the first time last September, attracted about 50,000 visitors over two days. The loss was due to higher-than-expected costs and a lack of ticket sales. Organisers said they wanted time to fully consider lessons learned and hoped to return in 2019.

The base is home to the Red Arrows and is also where Wing Cdr Guy Gibson commanded 617 Squadron, known as the Dambusters.
An annual air show was previously held at nearby RAF Waddington, home to the UK's Reaper fleet. This was axed in 2015 by the MoD over "increased security concerns" because of Reaper Drones in far off lands being remotely controlled from the base.

I am guessing if they are reluctant to put on a show in the 100th year of the RAF then it won't happen again....Crying

Its a shame, but when 50,000 people turn up in two days and they don`t make a profit Blink how much must tickets be in order for them to make that required profit?

There is a limit as to what people think is a sensible price to pay, for example tickets for RIAT this year start at £50 Blink

Clearly Scampton we’re hoping for far greater than 50,000 at the ticket price being sold, (single tickets were £39) and a lot of people saying it was overpriced and not a patch on Waddington.

Sounds like it won't be back. Sad that more and more airshows seem to be falling by the wayside, most because of spiralling costs through insurance and the many display restrictions in place since the Shoreham Air Show disaster. People won't be willing to pay such prices just to see the aircraft flying straight and level circuits, they want thrilling displays.

It may be that you'll have to visit aviation museums instead if you want to see a classic warbird in the not too distant future! Sad

Concerning that the home base of the Red Arrows (and Dambusters) had a failed show, possibly down to poor organisation or assumption that many thousands might turn out just because it was the home of the Red's?

I agree Tom, very concerning and if I'm honest I think airshows could be gone completely before my days are over. They are only going to get more and more expensive to organise and with a dwindling fan base due to exorbitant ticket prices, eventually the sums won't add up.

That will be a sad day! Sad

They seem to be heading toward being Seafront event's where its safe, can see a time coming where there will only be such as RIAT which is a combined commercial & public airshow.
