PACK 8
Pack 8 continues with the mechanism for raising and lowering TB2.
In this section you will also test the system to make sure that it works.
First, you need to complete the side rail mechanism. This is very straightforward but make absolutely sure that the front two screws (left and right) of the black lower rail track are FULLY tightened. This is critical as even the slightest ‘give’ will cause the gears to skip and the mechanism won’t work.
The next parts of Thunderbird 2 are to build pod 4.
The assembly and weathering of the pods has been described previously so there’s no need to go over it again here.
However, bear in mind this is pod 4 – the carrier of Thunderbird 4, so there will be no need to add any track markings on the floor or doors.
All painting and weathering other than this is the same as pod 3.
The next rescue vehicle is one of the most iconic TV vehicles ever – the Mole.
This is actually as superbly detailed little model that deserves to be displayed on its own.
You could even build a small diorama for this vehicle, which is something I am going to later in the build. Detailed instructions for this will be given at that time.
The lower section of the Mole can be built as per the instructions.
Reference images of this vehicle show that the transport section is actually a greyer and darker shade of blue than the kit parts.
This can be easily altered by giving the whole chassis/tilt section a light coat of matt grey.
Further weathering will be done later on.
Build the actual Mole as per the instructions.
Again, it can then be washed over in matt black and matt brown mixed with white spirit.
Try to make the weathering ‘move’ from front to back, as if the Mole has actually been tunnelling.
The side tracks of the Mole vehicle have seam lines running along the centre which is quite noticeable.
These should be removed with a file or folded wet and dry.
Once the seam has been removed, repaint the tracks a dark grey/black.
The nose or drill section should be toned down within the ‘spiral’ using a heavier matt black wash.
The tracks of the carrier should be painted a grey/brown with a final black wash.
