Hi everyone,

Just a quick question to those who are using a different wood to that supplied for the bulwark caps. I am using mahogony, but the curve at the poop seems almost impossible to shape. Can anyone suggest anything?
I tried scoring the wood as per the magazine, and also soaked in my 'patented flask method' as I did when planking, but mahogony is so brittle it snapped very easily.

Interested to hear from SOB as we seem to have used very similar woods throughout our builds, or anyone else using maybe walnut or mahogony for the caps.

Regards,
Tom

tom,the method I use for mahogany is first an overnight soak, make sure that the piece is oversized, then use the plank bender to start a curve, then I use a soldering iron to get the tight bend, don't worry about scorching,it's on the inside of the bend.
Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory
Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat.

Hi Tom,

I use the hot water methode like you, but I will soak and dry over night, may be 3 times bending more each time.

sometimes I will bend maybe 6 planks at a time. this gives more support.
I have attached a photo of some planks I have done once, the top one of the group has come out best, but I will soak and bend them at least one more time.

Hope this helps. Cheers

Thanks for the help guys, I'll have a play around tomorrow.
I thought about doing the veneer also - we shall see! the angle is nearly 90 degrees so it'll be a tricky one.

Cheers again,
Tom

You'll find all sorts of methods in the link below, but rather than trying to bend the very end of the strip to create the tight angle, make sure the strip has plenty of length and bend 1/4 of the way along which will give you leverage following the steaming/soaking process.

Tomick I've had a look on google but to no avail, do you know a good link for rigging? I would have though there would be something on MSW, but can't find any.
