Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out on 16/17 May 1943 by Royal Air Force 617 Squadron, subsequently publicised as the "Dam Busters", using a purpose-built (upkeep) "bouncing bomb" developed by Barnes Wallis. The Möhne and Edersee Dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley; the Sorpe Dam sustained only minor damage. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed and several more damaged. Factories and mines were also damaged and destroyed. An estimated 1,600 civilians drowned: about 600 Germans and 1,000 mainly Soviet forced-labourers. Despite rapid repairs by the Germans, production did not return to normal until September.
The 75th anniversary of this event spans the 16/17 May 2018.

The Imperial War Museum has recently announced that it is converting more of its film collection into MP4 format, more suitable for viewing online across various platforms.
One of the items which has recently been released is this eight minute compilation of amateur and official film records, showing off-duty scenes of Wing Commander Guy Gibson of 617 Squadron with his dog (run over on 16 May 1943), 106 Squadron night bomber raid against Turin (28 November 1942), Gibson addressing Boy Scouts at Maidstone about the Dams Raid, (colour) Gibson illustrating the Dams Raid, close-ups of his gallantry wards and posing in garden of Glad Bincham (Thomas Gladstone Bincham, Chairman of Reeds Paper and friend to 617 Squadron).
What is striking about the last sequence is how young the colour film makes Gibson look, when we are used to seeing him in black and white. He was in fact only about 24 years and 10 months when it was shot.
