Hi All,

Recently I built a 1970s Airfix Spitfire kit and I totally enjoyed the simplicity of it. most the time I am building big or complex or both so its a real change of pace to do something a bit more basic, It reminds me of the thrill of modelling I got 40 years ago.

With all the etch work I have been doing recently I fancied a change of pace for a couple of weeks before getting back to my build of the year entry.

So this is the first of what will be several 'classic' Airfix builds I have planned in between my main build in amongst them will be the stunning 1914 Dennis Fire engine, A 1642 English musketeer, and some medium size builds the all time classic HMS Victory and hopefully the stunning Christie 1911 American Steam Fire Engine amongst others

This build is the HO scale Stephenson's Rocket. originally released in 1960, my kit is the 1973 blister pack release, what Airfix called a 'series 1 kit' at the time. Now I actually built this, without ever painting it as a kid, I seem to recall buying it from a train museum gift shop. despite its age and scale The kit is very good...

The packaging is minimal but actually really good and has survived much better than many old boxed kits do.
the parts are not able to move about inside the blister so nothing has come of the sprue, ill in 'showroom condition'
the card top folds out to show the instruction primed on the back and on the other side of the flap is the painting instructions in colour! the paints are listed by their Airfix paint numbers.

The parts are all moulded in a rather hard yellow plastic, its difficult to work with and I found adhesive struggled to belt and bond the joints as quickly as I am used to.

there is a very good level of surface detail with panel lines and rivets even the two figures dont look to bad for a couple of partly gentlemen BigGrin

The other nice feature about this kit is all the parts move, the tow hook, the wheels, the pistons. you could plop it on the Hornby track and push it along quite realistically Cool

Build starts with the boiler two halves back and front plates no issues with fit and only minimal flash and tab clean up. part thickness varies a little so there is some sanding required to level everything up. the gap at the front plate is supposed to be their there is a stepped recess on the part.

most the injection marks are in not visible places but the one on the foot plate is half seen so needed filling.

the funnel halves wire joined together some minor work needed on the seems. I drilled out the funnel crown before fitting it.

thats it for now

The supports for the stack and the piston system is the last parts to be fitted.

After fitting the final side and from half bulkhead the inside of the coal and water carriage was suitably weathered for shadow and coal dust

this completes the build and what a lot of fun it was. its a tiny model with the clean up and fit issues you would expect of a kit of this age. yes lots of it are not to scale, but that is not the point. I smiled all the way through the buildCool Cool Cool
