Upkeep bouncing bomb 120/62 test Remove bomb bay doors 3. 2nd wave went first, took long route to meet first wave Strayed of course, shot down. Torpex 3 reached sorpe dam Conventional bombs used Flew too low Sgt Burns 4. Under armed gaurd 5520 Keep out of bomb aimers sights 5. Question #1 - (a) Tuesday 26th July 1938. Chaired by Air Vice Marshal W. Sholto Douglas.
(b) Bombing Committee Paper number 16.
Question #2 - (a) Upkeep (b) 120 ordered, 62 used for practice.
(c) By removing the bomb bay doors.
(d) Torpex.
Question #3 - (a) Wave 2 took off first. They took a longer more northern route to avoid flak.
(b) Aircraft 'AJ-K' was hit by flak on the Dutch coast and crashed into Waddenzee, west of Harlingen. Pilot was P/O Vernon William Byers.
(c) Only 1 aircraft from the 2nd wave reached the Sorpe dam, though two others from the 3rd wave also reached it. The Upkeep bombs without being spun first.
(d) Sgt Burns. His pilot, F/O Geoff Rice, misjudged his height and touched the sea. The aircraft was engulfed in water but the pilot managed to keep it airborne. Then as he tried to climb the vast amount of water that had entered the fuselage poured to the rear of the aircraft and ran out of the back, almost drwoning Sgt Burns in the process!
Question #4 - (a) When on the ground the aircraft with a 'G' suffix were to be under an armed guard at all times.
(b) 6560 hp (4 x 1640 hp
(c) To keep his feet out of the bomb aimer's face.
Question #5 - (a) RAF Coningsby on 4th January 1944, then to RAF Woodhall Spa five days later on 9th January 1944.

Forgot to answer both parts of question #5 part (c), so have reposted my answers below with the necessary correction as allowed by Alans' new ruling in post #50:

2nd attempt Q1: 26th July 1938 - chair W. Shoto Douglas Paper number 16 Q2: Upkeep 120 - 60 for test Strengthened type B bomb trolley and 10 ton Coles crane to lift the tail and bomb moved in from the tail end not side. Torpex Q3: Second wave took off first as had longer northern route to join first wave as they crossed the coast. In AJ-B Flight Lieutenant W Astell hit high tension wires and pylon 4 Km from Marbech One plane from second wave reached the Sorpe - bomb not spun and flew length of dam on bombing run not 90 degrees to the dam.
