This photo shows the donor model being measured with vernier calipers. Prior to this I measured the overall length of the donor, multiplied this measurement by a factor of 1.5 to give me the correct length for 1/48 scale and then compared this with the actual length of the larger version. Surprisingly, the 1/48 scale version came out spot on [within 0.5mm anyway], which I was very happy with.  I continued in this way, measuring corresponding points of both models to gauge the difference between their footprints. A centre line was drawn through this outline and specific points marked out that correspond to the 1/48 scale version. These points were measured, noted and then multiplied by a factor of 1.5 for the converted measurements and also noted onto the outline. As you know, the trick is to envisage how it's going to be built before even making a start. I'm also interested to see how it turns out! Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This weeks update continues with modifying the conning tower to convert it from a Type 2 to a Type 4, which U230 had retro-fitted in late 1942. The last update saw the 1/72 conning tower foot print drawn out including measurements at specific points on 0.5mm thick plastic sheet. The next step is to translate those measurements to 1/48 scale and create a foot print for my U230 conning tower. The starting point was to drill out two locating holes on the same plastic sheet as the 1/72 profile that match the dowels on the 1/48 conning tower as can be seen in the attached photograph.
