U S S Constitution Pack 9- Stages 81-90

Stage 81 contents:- Brass wire, deadeyes, blocks, name plate, columns, stars and eagle.

Take all the white metal casting provided in this stage and clean up all the edges then give them all a coat of undercoat. When dry give all the pieces apart from the nameplate two coats of matt white. Paint the nameplate matt black and when dry paint the letters white.

Take the columns and place each one on either side of the gun port lids then for the last two measure 12mm from the outermost column and glue in position. Next place the stars on the transom making sure there is room for the eagle to sit centrally. Once in position fix the eagle in place.

Now take the nameplate and line it up centrally between the two white bars on the transom and glue it in position.

Stage complete.

Stage 82

Stage 82 contents:- Helm pedestals, binnacles, wheels, blocks, pins, barrel and ramin strips.

Take the two helm pedestals and paint them matt black, then take the wooden barrel and sand it until it is 3mm wide. Drill a 1.5mm hole through its centre if it is not already drilled. Next cut a length of brass wire 10mm long and square the ends. Take a piece of 2 x 4mm strip and cut a length 22mm long, drill holes at both ends 2mm in from the edge. I also added another strip next to this one so the wheel assembly sat correctly. Stain the strip with your chosen wood stain.

Insert the brass rod into the barrel then glue a pedestal to either side of the barrel making sure both the feet of each pedestal line up with each other. When dry add the two wheels to the assembly making sure the handles line up with each wheel.

Glue the drilled strip between the mizzen mast hole and up against the grating end, it should be the same width as the grating. Once the glue is dry test fit the wheel assembly in position and add another 22mm strip if necessary so the assembly sits flat to the deck. Glue the assembly in position.

Cut a length of 0.15 natural thread and glue one end into one of the holes you have drilled in the platform. Pass the thread around the barrel several times then glue the end into the other drilled hole.

Stage complete.

Take both the trailboards and remove any flash/casting marks with a file then paint both matt black. When dry use white paint to pick out the detail and finally use blue and red paint to detail the coat of arms. When all is dry fix the trailboards to either side of the stem.

From stage 82 take the two binnacles and paint the bottom section brown and the upper section white. Take the two binnacles and glue them centrally along the grating in front of the helm.

Drill three holes in the transom between the upper white rails, drill the 1st centrally and the other two 18mm to each side of it. Glue three eyepins into the holes after trimming them to length then add a further 4 eyepins to the holes you drilled at 10mm and 28mm on either side of the davits.

Stage 85

Stage 85 contents:- Skylight, brass wire, Collars, net, eyepins and blocks.

Smooth any burrs on the skylight then paint it brown and when dry paint the recesses black. With a ruler mark a point centrally 40mm away from the rear transom. Place the skylight on the deck and mark equally six points in a circle around it. Take a 0.75 mm drill and drill a hole through the six points just marked.

Cut a piece of 1mm brass wire 100mm long then form it in a loop around a 20mm diameter former to get a ring then place 6 eyepins onto the ring and glue the rings ends together. Place the eyrins through the six holes drilled in the deck making sure they are at 8mm height and glue them in place.

Take the skylight and glue it centrally inside the ring and then add a small cleat just behind it. Now take the mast collars and smoth them and if needed stain them with your chosen wood stain. Glue one over the mainmast hole in the deck and the other in the same way over the foremast hole.

Stage 86

Stage 86 contents:-
Brass wire, netting, eyepins, cleats, pins and brown thread.

Just like you did in stage 73 cut and make the brass parts to make the port midships ladder/grating frame. Drill 1mm holes around the ladder and fit it in the same way you fitted the starboard midships ladder frame. Finish the frame off by adding the rails to make a mirror image.

Next take two more carronade carriages provided previously and assemble them in the same way you have done the other gun carriages.

Stage 87 contents:-
Davits, thread, cleats, bulwark ends, blocks and deadeyes.

Cut a piece of 1mm brass rod 20mm long then bend the ends to get a 10mm wide bracket. Just behind the cleat on the deck drill two 1mm holes 10mm apart and glue the brass bracket into the holes you just drilled.

Take the netting you received with stage 86 and cut a strip from a corner 15mm wide and 54mm long. Cut the strip in to three 18mm wide pieces and then test fit them on the inside of the three transom gun ports. Adjust the netting if necessary and then glue them in place.

Take the eight large cleats from stage 84 smooth them and paint them brown. When dry place four at the bow between the gun ports and the other four at the stern two in line with the mainmast hole the other two in line with the helm.

Stage 88

Stage 88 contents:-
Davits, bulwark ends, cleats, pins, blocks and deadeyes.

Take an assembled carronade and place it behind the 1st gun port on the port side. Using a 0.75 drill bit drill 2 shallow holes on ether side of the gun. Trim 2 eyebolts to length and glue them into the holes you just drilled. Do the same along both sides of the hull placing eyebolts either side of the gun ports.

Take the netting you used to make the transom gun port covers and cut more strips off it 13mm wide. You will need 24 pieces cut from these strips 19mm wide. Next line a carronade up with a gun port and place a piece of netting in front of it to gauge where the hole needs to be cut in the net for the gun barrel to pass through.

You now have a choice you can glue the nets in position and cut holes out of each one or pre-cut the holes before attaching them to the bulwarks. I pre-cut mine using a 4mm punch to get 22 nets with holes in. Attach all the 22 nets over the gun ports when you are finished the two extra nets will fit over the ports at the bow but without holes cut in them.

You will now have two oblong holes at midships and just past the bows three gun ports cut more netting to cover these on both sides of the hull.

Stage 89

Stage 89 contents:-
Bulwark ends, eyepins, deadeyes, capstan, thread and brass wire.

Straighten a roll of 1mm brass wire then cut three pieces 126 mm long and 17 pieces 63mm long from it. Form the 126mm pieces into 'U' bends two at 40mm width the last at 37mm. Bend the other pieces at the top like the ones used in the midships ladder cages. Drill seven holes around the first midships ladder and then do the same for the next two ladder grating assemblies.

Take a 40mm wide 'U' wire and place diagonally corner to corner then cut, measure and glue six 63mm bent wires around it. Repeat this on the next grating with the other 40mm wide 'U' piece and wires. Next cut to length more brass wire to form the rails on both cages leaving a gap where the ladders are.

Construct the third cage using the 37mm wide 'U' piece and the remaining shaped wires then cut more wire to put rails on three sides leaving the ladder side open.

When dry glue the capstan midships between the two square gratings.

From your saved items take 12 small cleats and paint them brown. When dry fix three above the large bow cleat and one next to the single pin rack. Fix another above the large midships cleat and the sixth one just forward of the ships entrance in the bulwark. Place the remaining cleats in the same positions on the other side of the ship.
