The Soleil comes with some beautiful ornamentation and can only wonder if these pieces will tarnish over time and lose their lustre. To prevent this from happening it may be an idea to give all these pieces a coat of clear gloss varnish. Although this step may not be in the instructions it is something I will be doing when I come to doing my build.....  .. Just a thought.... Regards Alan

If I remember correctly the instructions suggest going over the ornaments with a wash of bitumen of judea to bring out the details. Bitumen of judea will also harden out under the influence of light into a supremely resistant protective layer.

 Good idea Alan as it will protect the carvings from tarnish . I'm going to paint mine as I did with the Sovereign in my favourite gold paint Rgd Martyn Building ?

The instructions in Pack 10 does say to simply use a brown wash or Bitumen of Judea to add relief and shows the best way to achieve a good result. Whatever members choose to use consideration should be given to the possibility of tarnishing over time as a wash may not give this protection. Some members may simply choose to leave the decorative pieces as received and not apply a wash. Regards Alan

For the official build I used Tamiya Smoke. Its a semi clear wash that once on you wipe off immediately and the leave to dry. Its very sticky once it starts to go off, which doesn't take long as its alcohol based.
It gives great results and it takes the yellow look out of the brass.
