Hi All I am contemplating doing either the Vasa or the Sots as my very first ship build. i was pretty keen on the Sots but when i came back to take another look i saw the Vasa and with family heritage from that part of the world (Danish descent) thought it would be the better to start with. As a first time builder im a little aprehensive about starting a project of this size after an extended break away from modeling. but the historical nature of the Vasa is drawing me in. oh and by the way im from NZ Regards Erik Current builds

It you’ve never construct a wooden ship kit previously, then it’s a good idea to start with a smaller less complex ship kit such as the Endeavour Longboat kit that you can learn the basics from while gathering the parts for the Vasa or SotS.
Vasa has a huge amount of detail painting to do and the SotS is the more difficult of the two to construct.

Yes definitely try something smaller, but out of the bigger ones I have seen, the Constitution seems to be the less involved. I would suggest though that you have lots of tools and patience. It is better to get the right tool than to hurry and make due.

Welcome to the forum Erik, great to have you with us.... .. The SOTS and the Vasa are both beautiful ships but I'd certainly recommend you take on something a little easier, especially if you have not build these kind of models before.... .. Look forward to seeing some of your work.... Regards Alan

Hi And welcome. can I suggest you have a stab at the Dhow or the longboat from this site, with kits are serous entry level and you can get a feel for planking, tapering, rigging for a small out lay. once you got that under your belt you are ready for something that bit bigger as long as you take your time
A little tip regardless which kit you go for first or which of the larger ones you take at some point download a set of the HMS Victory instructions they have much more detail on how to do thinks than the other kits and why embers who have built some of these usually recommend Victory as the first big build.

Hi all. Thanks for the comments. Probably a wise choice to do a smaller build first. I will have a look at the various other kits and see what grabs me. As a bit more background. I was heavily into model building when younger and had many diarama sets built from scratch and all painted etc. Not 100% sure where they ended up as I don't have any still with me. Another ship that is on my list to do is the cutty sark. This also has family connections from my mum's side. Dad is the Dane which gets me the Scandinavian connection to the Vasa. So I've sort of made a decision to start with the Virginia schooner. Trouble is it's more in postage than the model £100 postage v £70 for the model. Looks like its £100 regardless of whiich model you get. Sometimes it's a beggar living in NZ. Well ok not really lol The other possible contender for a start build is the San Francisco 11 which I see a few have done as a first time build. Also is there a general chat place as this thread is now not really in the right place being the Vasa thread Current builds
