Also you would expect good tiles to have a rivet pattern along the edges. What pattern will the DEAg ones have, Tomick? Mike T

My question is, would it be better to tile the lower hull after the planking has finished rather than wait to later? Oh! and MR T I noticed that you said that the official build will be painted rather than copper tiles due to the time lag of waiting for the copper tiles themselves. I don't suppose you would reconsider that would you? I want to tile mine and I'm sure quite a few other guys do as well, but to be honest I have never done it before and I would appreciate your expert guidance.

You do tile the lower hull after planking is complete.
Its not a case of being able to reconsider, the hull of the diary build has already been copper painted which is to ensure that the build remnains on track.
I'm told that a specific installation guide will be provided with the tile pack and I am sure there wil be others in the forum who will present their coppering efforts for you to follow.

It is certainly not the case that tiles without tack marks are not good, because it is highly debatable as to whether or not tack heads would even be visible at 1/84 scale. The copper tiles can of course be tack marked, which can be done with use of a 'Pounce wheel' tool, (commonly known as a Rivet maker). The concept is simple enough, the wheel of the tool is a sharp-toothed cog-wheel, which when run along a surface such as a copper tile, it produces a line of embossed dents, which when the tile is turned over, what are indentations on one side are raised heads on the other, though some prefer the sunken look. The finer the pitch of the teeth of the wheel, the closer the indentation spacing is. Those who subscribed to Hachette's Lancaster series will have such a tool. Thanks for the info Mr T, It seems that I'm not as up to date with the build diary as I thought, and that your already beyond that point . I know you have a schedule to keep. Still would have loved to see how you did it though.

This was the intention, but owing to the tiling set taking longer than they had hoped in development, the intent is no longer viable.

Hi All Although I am 3 months off reaching the tiling stage I am definitely ordering the copper tiles I am thinking of painting the "cut out" side of the model and tiling the the "good" side. Anybody got any ideas,or comments about this idea. All comments would be welcome First Build HMS Victory and HMS Endeavour Also Krick steam boat "Victoria" Cheers Ivan (Ordinary Seaman) http://www.old-glossop.com

Nice idea as long as the planking of the un-tiled side is of a good standard, otherwise it will look like you ran out of tiles to hide any errors or poor surfacing. The main thing is, have it how you want it to be. If you go the half tiled route, you'll obviously only need approx half the number of tiles, so you might want to consider looking at buying say the Miskin Model tile (say 20 packs of 100 @£2 p/pack inc P+P), which are a larger sized tile at 5.5mm x 15mm (and therefore slightly out of scale but less needed), but would cost around £40, instead of £60 for the 4,500 tile pack - half of which you wont need. http://www.plankonframe.com/page5.htm
Having said that, the offer pack is super value for money in comparison and they're also scale size.

Hi Mr T, If I make a mess of the planking, providing I have all the tiles from DeagI will be able to hide it. The hull surface will still need to be free of dents or planking steps, otherwise the tiles will folow the same route, and because they are shiny such imperfections will be visible, though the shinnyness of the tiles will fade to a dull over time unless you choose to polish them or clear seal over the top.

Your right, the application of approx 4,000 tiles is most certainly not a 5 minute task

Mr T....any chance of you posting a pic of your painted hull so I can make a decision whether to tile or just paint, I'm still a little unsure as to which way to go and being able to see the finish might save me £60 if the painted finish looks good enough. This being my first build, would be nice to have a comparison. Thank you.
