Hello Everyone,

After couple of day laziness build carried on. Cool

Issue 93 continued:
- hammock cranes, ropes and nets completed all around the bulwarks.
I didn't cut off the rope (wire) at the carronades, as I studied pictures from the real ship I noticed that the rope is continuous there too.

Custom buckets:
- I decided that from the three previously trialed handle option I go for the one where the wire is glued onto the top of the bucket. The other two options were a) too fiddly to make, b) didn't look realistic on this scale.
- handles glued onto all buckets
- buckets glued onto the hooks
Few spare buckets still left, in case 1-2 comes off or I decide to add some buckets onto other places on the deck too.

Issue 91 revisited:
- I changed my mind regarding the stern davits and they were made and fitted.

Issue 95 started:
- started to make the hammocks

Hello All,

Issue 95 continued:
- 69 hammocks out of the 109 I need is made and fitted

Hint for those who hasn't done the hammocks yet:
I found it easier to use a toothpick to roll up the cloth rather than do it just on its own. It also makes easier to tie the knots. Once the glue dried the hammock can be just slide off from the toothpick and then trim the ends neat.

Lovely work and I do like the way you look at an issue and come up with ways to make the build more uniform in places, the use of a toothpick is novel but effective...... Look forward to your next update....Cool Cool

Hello All,

Thank you for the kinds words, means a lot. RollEyes

To complete the fittings on the decks before I start rigging, I went back to Issue 19 to make and fit the barrels.
- First, as many of you, I fine tuned the provided barrels by carving a recess to the tops & bottoms.
- Then stained them with dark oak
- The next bit was very awkward. I thought it will be easy to paint 1mm masking tape and fit them. But at the end this was the part I struggled the most on the barrels.
As a start I peeled off the backing paper from a wide double sided tape and stuck strips of 1mm masking tape onto it. I used this backing paper to ensure that after I remove the strips they still will be sticky.
Then started to paint them... Trouble Nr.1... Even if my masking tape is paper based the top surface is still a bit greasy or something therefore the paint didn't stick to it. Crying
What shall I do??? Plan B... I sprayed them with black paint I used for other parts of the build. It seemed OK.
Well... until I tried to remove them... Trouble Nr. 2... the excess paint was peeling off from the backing paper...Blink Blink
I had to cut the strips around very carefully with a craft knife before peeling off, but still lots of small paint pieces came off from the backing paper. While holding the peeled off strip I had to remove the hanging particles with a tweezer... Trouble Nr. 3... after a while there was so many tiny paint pieces on the table that they were sticking to everywhere... Angry Angry Angry
Anyhow, eventually managed to fit all 12 strips to the barrels making sure that the joint of each strips are lining up, so they can be on the bottom, invisible when assembled to the skids.
- skids made, painted, eyebolt added, thread tied to one of the eyebolts
- then I made a little jig to ensure that the skids are parallel and square. I took a 16 mm masking tape and stuck the first skid onto it flush with one edge. Then stuck a spare strip perpendicular and bottomed up to one end of the skid. I used the cutting mat prints as a guide. Then I used two 1x4mm strip as a spacer to ensure the skids parallel in a suitable distance. Finally stuck the other skid bottomed up to the spacers and the strip.
- barrels glued together and then glued to the skids.
- finally the threads tied to the other eyebolts and the assembly fitted to the quarter deck.

Pleased with the result. Cool

Ahoy Shipmates,

Thanks for the positive comments Blushing.

Jumped to Issue 108 to fit the forecastle guns:
- I followed my previous customisations:
- hollow central cut and "holes" on the wheels to simulate the pins and assembly
- tiny axles turned for the wheels instead of the provided wire
- parts assembled and painted
- I took some inspiration from Bernd's build diary to rig somehow the cannons to the deck as the magazine didn't give any instructions, it says just "place the guns onto the deck". So I added some eyebolts to the guns and to the deck and rigged them with 0.25 and 0.75 mm natural thread. I'm sure it's not the way how they were rigged on the actual ship, but looks good enough for me. Cool Cool Cool

Issue 95 continued:
- I opted to add the boarding pikes
- I followed the magazine instructions to paint the pins.
- I haven't got 1.5 mm masking tape, I trialled 1 and 2 mm. I couldn't get the 1mm tape wind nicely to a band, it was keep slipping up/down, so at the end I went for the 2mm tape.

Dear All,

Thanks for the nice comments! Blushing

Issue 95 continued:
- boarding pikes fitted to the masts
- bindings added

Issue 94 started:
- all lanterns assembled and painted
- stern lanterns fitted
- the one to the mast will be fitted later on

Big milestone reached. THE HULL IS COMPLETE. BigGrinBigGrin BigGrin
Well.... gunport lids, dummy guns still to do but as they are quite delicate I don't want to risk to be knocked off during rigging, hence they will be done after rigging is completed.

Started the rigging, so jumped back to Issue 92:
- started to fit the pendants, with the main and mizzen masts first.
I found it very awkward to do it, probably I need four arms to do it or I just don't have enough experience compared to the pros here. BigGrin
So I done a little trick to make it easier.
First I folded the thread back approx. the correct height and fixed the folded end with a spare thread with a double knot. With this in place I was able to set up the exact height without keep holding it with one hand. Then I tried to do the "hidden knot" (see anchor & masts binding) but it was still difficult to do due to the lack of space underneath the tops.
So I simplified it a bit. I made a loose single knot from the 0.15mm thread, slide it onto the loop and put a toothpick onto the loop. Then pulled the knot tight to form the eye around the toothpick, and sealed the knot. Once the glue dried I winded the thin thread around the thick one to make the binding. Finally finished with a half hitch, sealed and trim off the excess threads. The toothpick was also helping to make the eyes to the same size on all pendants. Done and dusted. Cool
