The Yamaha YZR-M1 is an inline-four motorcycle specifically developed by Yamaha Motor Company to race in the MotoGP series. It succeeded the 500cc YZR500 by the 2002 season and was originally developed with a 990cc engine. Since then, the YZR-M1 has been continuously developed into several iterations through the 990cc, 800cc and 1000cc era's of GP Motorcycle Racing and the YZR-M1 lives on into the 2018 MotoGp series.
The incredible YZR-M1 powered Valentino Rossi to four of his seven championships in the premier class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing. Designed by Yamaha to contest the new MotoGP series, the YZR ‘Mission One’ developed into a winner when Rossi joined the team in 2004 – and rapidly became the bike to beat. In Valentino’s first season with Yamaha, his YZR-M1 took him to victory in nine of the 16 GPs, and in his second year, he won 10 of the 17 rounds, coming second or third in another five races and finishing an incredible 147 points clear of his nearest rival.
