Got my email to download my first build guide for the Akagi and i have to ask, is this all the stuff i get in pack 1? If it is, wow, quite a lot of stuff, i'll need to get some storage set up for the planes and sundries Also, when would be the best time to start painting? Do it piece by piece or wait till each part is finished and then paint ( i.e the whole island, finished funnel, ect )? I smile because i have NO IDEA whats going on :)

The instructions advise the points as and when and what you need to paint, however you can choose to paint and build as best suits yourself, it really depends on the level of your modelling expertise.
Batch 1 contains 4 sets of parts, which are noted as Stage numbers in the Official build, i.e. Stages 1-4 covers batch 1, Stages 5-8 will cover batch 2 etc etc.
