The for and aft decks were hand painted natural wood and then the light grey picked out the ironworks
The top deck and pods for the inside were primed in Halfords grey. parts that fit inside the hull for the exposed side decks where then painted the light grey as per the hull sides.
The island superstructure was assembled and put to one side for priming, fit is not to bad but lots of clean up required
I painted the upper deck dark green, not sure yet if I will leave the elevator sides green or paint them black
There regaling parts were cleaned up on the sprue so I could prime the lot in one go
Finally the for and aft deck were cemented into place and the two pods that do not have boats were fitted also

Thanks Alan,
I have used trimline to mark up the deck, looks quite smart against the airbrushed greensand much quicker than painting it on. I have also used black trimine to line the insides of the deck lifts, much quicker and neater than painting it. I also used tramline to add the black boot line around the hull.
The ships boats were hand painted in the pale grey before being glued in place, then painted chocolate brown for the decking. some boats needed to be painted before fitting others it was ok.
The parts of the deck that are not green were also hand painted with the pail grey.
With the ships boats in place the pods were glued in and the top deck fixed in place.
Life rafts were added next, I will finish the painting of these after they are glued on.
I cleaned up as many parts as possible on the sprue and airbrushed the lot. most of the connection points ar hides so this works ok. some periphery items, search kits etc could then be fixed in place
AA guns were also fitted. the range finders need a lot of clean up of seams, so I have fitted them unpainted and will be painted later
Having airbrushed the island superstructure, this was also fitted.
Thats it for a week or so as I am off on holiday, but she is nearly done.

The screws were painted real metal brass before fitting
the towers that line the deck have an issue with mould failure some are ok others not so I decided to replace all the towers ends with brass wire shaped with round nose pliers.
I wanted to add some animation at every opportunity so imagined the ship was getting ready to launch its aircraft, as they are assembled on deck the towers are dropped. I fixed the towers so as to show them in mid drop.
The funnel top was painted in black
I then came to the cranes, they are dreadful. perhaps the most detailed part of the model and the point where the holding is at its worst. even after a couple of hours with files, knife and abrasives it looks rubbish. this was the first time I really questioned why I did not get the etch.
The aircraft, having been cleaned up were first painted light blue underneath, then dark sea grey and dark green, all humbrol paints and assembled as painted.
I used gloss black for cockpit glass and hull red for the swordfish engine cowls
finally the life rafts were painted in.
Job done
As will all old kits this has some challenges, I would never spend 3 times the kit cost on etch as you won't end up with anything that accurate.
BUT if you take this for what it is there is a lot of fun to be had building this and thats why we build models, for fun, isn't it?

You're right Jase, we do build for fun All-in-all a cracking job done too! Don't know how i would have managed at that scale, you must have exceptionally good eyesight, or a high powered magnifier  Regards Gray
