Ahoy Shipmates,

I hope you can help on few questions:

1) The magazine shows/says that the catharpins (brass wire) should be fitted behind the shrouds, but the pictures on official build shows to fit front of them. Which one is the correct?

2) The magazine and the official build both says to use 0.5 mm thread to fix the catharpins, however on the pictures (both magazine and official build) they seems much thinner, more like 0.25 or even 0.15 mm. Wouldn’t be the knot too big if 0.5 was used?

3) I just can’t get my head around how the knot should be done. I was looking at the magazine instruction. I understand the first part to make the “figure 8” around the shroud and the wire, but I don’t know how to finish it off with a reef knot. The ends are on the right side at the end of the “8”, so how I make a reef knot at the front of the cross?
I would really appreciate if you could post some step-by-step instructions, pictures or drawing would be most helpful.

4) The pendants are hanging in an unnatural position (slightly splayed out) even if I soaked them with PVA and used weights until dries. Will anything be fitted onto them later on, or they will hang just on their own? I’m thinking to glue them to the side of the bibbs to look more natural hanging, but I can do it only if nothing will be attached to them.

Hi All,

I just figured out how to make that “figure 8” + reef knot.
But the other three questions still stand.

Thanks for answers in advance.

1. There are in front and behind versions which changed on the ship. In front was shown on the official build for better clarity.

2. The thread in the magazine and official build is that supplied and noted.

3. Gandale will take a look at assisting you on this, though we’ve not had anyone that’s had a problem with the instructions in this aspect.

Hi Laszlo

Great to hear you've managed to figure out the process of securing the catharpins. In answer to your last question, nothing gets attached to the pendants, they are simply left as they are.

Regards

Alan

For pendants, (if I understand your question), I've used fabric stiffener from a craft store. Just spray and shape to any natural form you're looking for until it dries.
