Hi all! Waiting for pack two to arrive. I have the launch finished, all of the pack one stuff done. I have my keel jig ready. The keel is straight as an arrow horizontally, vertically not so much. How important is it to square that up vertically? I can surely pull it square. Thanks in advance and looking forward to working with you all through the project.

Hi Brutis, great to hear from you.....

Everything needs to line up correctly otherwise its likely to cause problems further into the build so you should ensure the keel is straight and true on all plains. I would also suggest you maintain a build diary and post up pics so I can see exactly how everything lines up. It also helps us see any problems you may run into further down the line....

I've got the gun deck fitted this week and about to start fairing. I noticed that rib 15 is quite proud from the rest. Is this something to be concerned about? Do I sand it down to match? I'm going to wait for your answers.

Yes, this comes up lot. It is important to get the fairing right as it will affect the look of the planking.

Don’t skimp the fairing, it took me 2 weeks to complete this stage in the end. If you are in any doubt whether a section is ready or not, carry on. I broke the hull into 6 sections. Port and starboard, bows, stern and mid section. I also glued 3 planks together to give me a line across the whole length (you can use mortise and tenons for this). You need to use this plank to continuously to check each section you are working on and then the areas between sections across the whole length.

I found that, if any parts of the deck that were proud they could be taken back but, if the ribs were proud, leave them to be adjusted in line with their neighbouring ribs, not the deck which doesn't need to be built up. The other major problem I faced were ribs that were inset. These need to be built up before rubbing back again and sometimes they were badly off line especially the ubiquitous rib 14 if I remember rightly. However, you cannot leave these as they will ruin the look of the hull when you have finished planking especially in the areas above the decks. In the end mine worked out all good apart from one small bump on the bows below the water line but that has disappeared now that I have completed the tiling.

She has a gorgeous shape to her hull and deserves much care and attention at this stage.

Hope all that make sense and helps.

Good luck

Hi Burt,

Looking at your pics it looks as though you will have to adjust rib 15 but you may also have to adjust the ribs either side in order to give you a nice flow along the hull. Before adjusting you need to understand what it is you are trying to achieve through the fairing process and I would suggest you take a close look at this topic here...

https://forum.model-spac...spx?g=posts&t=19140

The fairing process is a really important process and is one you should take your time with, taking your time and completing the task in a methodical manner is the best way forward to give you the results you're looking for.

If you need to come back to us then just shout.....

Regards

Alan
