Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter

The X-wing is a versatile Rebel Alliance starfighter that balances speed with firepower. Armed with four laser cannons and two proton torpedo launchers, the X-wing can take on anything the Empire throws at it. Nimble engines give the X-wing an edge during dogfights, and it can make long-range jumps with its hyperdrive and its astromech droid co-pilot. Luke Skywalker is famous for destroying the Death Star behind the controls of his Red Five X-wing.

Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, originally released as Star Wars, is a 1977 film written and directed by George Lucas. It is the first movie in the Star Wars original trilogy.

The movie is set about nineteen years after the formation of the Galactic Empire; construction has finished on the Death Star, a weapon capable of destroying a planet. After Princess Leia Organa, a leader of the Rebel Alliance, receives the weapon's plans in the hope of finding a weakness, she is captured and taken to the Death Star. Meanwhile, a young farmer named Luke Skywalker meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived in seclusion for years on the desert planet of Tatooine. When Luke's home is burned and his aunt and uncle killed, Obi-Wan begins Luke's Jedi training as they—along with Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 - attempt to rescue the Princess from the Empire.

Inspired by movie's like the Flash Gordon serials and the Samurai movie's of Akira Kurosawa, as well as such critical works as Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces and Frank Herbert's Dune books, Lucas began work on Star Wars in 1974. Ground-breaking in its use of special effects, this is considered to be among the most successful – and most influential – movie's of all time. Produced with a budget of $11,000,000 and released on May 25, 1977, the movie became one of the most successful of all time, earning $215 million in the USA and $337 million overseas during its original theatrical release, as well as winning several movie awards, including 10 Academy Award nominations. It was re-released several times, sometimes with significant changes; the most notable versions were the 1997 Special Edition and the 2004 DVD, which were modified with CGI effects and recreated scenes. It was re-released in the Blu-ray format in September of 2011. The movie was selected to be preserved by the Library of Congress as part of its National Film Registry and was selected in 1989, the program's first year in existence.

Pack 1 contains issues/stages 1 - 4

Issue/stage 1 contains –
Laser cannon housing (outer half), Laser cannon shoulder, Laser cannon tube, Laser cannon jacket, Cockpit canopy front, Cockpit canopy rear. R2-D2 Dome, R2-D2 Internal LED, R2-D2 LED mount, R2-D2 Front panel, R2-D2 Right outer leg and R2-D2 Holographic projectors.

Assembling the cockpit canopy.

The cockpit canopy comes in two parts. The front hinges upwards, and the rear section is attached to the fuselage. You will add the flat glazed panels at a later stage.

Start by taking the two parts of the canopy and line up the hinges from the front section with the pins on the rear section.

Hook over the pins and press the parts together firmly until the hinges snap onto the pins. Check that the canopy hinges run smoothly up and down.

Keep the finished assembly safe until required later in the build.

Assembling the first laser cannon.

Start by taking the laser cannon shoulder, tube and jacket parts. Push the shoulder firmly into the jacket, making sure it is seated all the way in.

Then push the tube onto the shoulder, making sure the tube is seated on the shoulder.

Assembling R2-D2’s Dome

Start by identifying the three projectors. Carefully take the first projector off the sprue and fit it to the slot in the front of R2’s dome making sure it is fitted the right way around. Push the projector all the way until it fits flush. Remove the second projector from the sprue and slot it into the top of the dome, pushing it fully into the slot until it fits flush. Take the final projector and fit to the slot at the back of R2-D2’s dome in the same way as the others.

This issue is complete. Store any remaining parts in an issue labelled bag.

Issue/stage 2 contains – Rear laser generator inner and outer parts, Forward laser generator inner and outer parts, Rear laser generator end cap, Forward laser generator end cap, Laser generator union, Cockpit base, Laser generator LED, R2-D2 Left leg inner and outer halves, R2-D2 Power pack body and front, R2-D2 Shoulder joint.

Assembling R2-D2’s left leg.

Take all five parts of R2-D2’s left leg provided with this issue. Align the inner and outer halves of the leg, which have internal pins and sockets to join the parts. Press the two parts together firmly.

Push the pivot into the circular mounting on R2’s shoulder. The two lugs go at the top and bottom.

Press the small oval cap into the matching recess in the power pack, then press the two pins on the power pack into the matching holes in R2-D2’s foot.

That completes the left leg, ready to fit to R2-D2’s body at a later stage.

Assembling the laser generator.

Fit the LED into the small hole in the end of the forward generator end cap. Feed the wire past the pin inside of the forward generator body, then fit the socket in the other half of the generator body over the pin. Press the two halves together, taking care not to trap the wire.

Push the generator body into the end cap, noting the projecting lug, which only allows it to fit in one position.

Feed the wire through the central union and then push the union into the generator body, again noting the projecting lug, which only allows it to fit in one position.

Take the rear end cap, which has a slot to match an internal lug in the central union. Push the end cap into the central union, leading the wire out through the groove.

Take the two halves of the generator body and fit the internal pins into the matching sockets, pushing the halves firmly together.

Align the slot in the thick end with the lug in the end cap. Finally push the two halves of the generator together.

That completes the assembly to this point. Keep the generator safe until needed at a later stage.

This issue is now complete. Store any remaining parts in an issue labelled bag.

R2-D2 Right leg inner side, R2-D2 Leg pivot and R2-d2 power pack parts.

Assembling R2-D2’s right leg.

Take all four parts of R2-D2’s leg provided with this issue, plus the right leg and internal LED from issue 1.

Slip the LED through the hole in the inner half of R2’s leg, making sure it goes through from the inside. Feed the wires along the inside of his leg.

Slip the metal disc contacts into the two housing slots at the base of R2’s foot, ensuring they do not touch each other in the middle. Ensure the contacts fit right in the housing and run the wires up the inside of the leg without obstructing the three mountings. Fit the outer half over the inner half as you did in stage 2, but make sure you do not trap the wires and ensure that the metal disc contacts align with the slots in the outer half of the leg. When both parts are correctly aligned, press them firmly together.

Push the pivot into the circular mounting on R2-D2’s shoulder with the two lugs at the top and the bottom.

Press the small oval cap into the matching recess in the power pack. Press the pins on the power pack into the holes in R2-D2’s foot.

That completes the right leg assembly. Note, the two brass contacts visible on the base of his foot, will power the LED when R2-D2 is inserted into the droid socket behind the cockpit.

Cockpit Assembly.

Take the cockpit base from issue 2, together with the cockpit frames and screws supplied with this issue.

Take the largest right-side frame, marked with an “R”, and fit it into the right rear holes in the cockpit base, noting which way round it goes. Using the screw driver provided, screw one of the screws up into the hole in the frame. Take the smallest right-side frame, marked “R”, and fit it into the next set of holes and secure it with another screw. Fit the remaining “R” frame on the same side as the others and screw in place. Mirror the remaining frames on the left of the cockpit base as before.


Assembling the Laser Cannon.

Align the laser generator with the cannon housing supplied with this issue, noting the two pins and mounting sockets.

Fit the two pins into the mounting sockets and press the generator into place, leading the wire through the notch in the housing. Take the outer half of the laser cannon, supplied with issue 1, and align it with the inner half, pressing the two halves together firmly.

Take the rear end cap and align it with the end of the housing, pushing it firmly in place which will hold the assembly together.

Align the tab and pin in the tubes with the matching holes in the housing, pressing the side tubes into place. Align the tab in the detail with the matching slot in the side tubes, making sure the part is the correct way around and press firmly into the slot.

Align the front end cap with the end of the housing, noting that the hole is “D” shaped and will only fit in one position. Press the end cap firmly into the housing, ensuring that it covers the end of the side tubes to lock them in place.

Press the barrel assembly from stage 1 firmly onto the end of the front end cap.

This issue is now complete. Store any remaining parts in an issue labelled bag.

Issue/stage 4 contains – Cockpit right and left frames, screws, Fibre optic cable, Laser cannon emitter, Laser cannon tip, Laser cannon flashback suppressor, Laser cannon suppressor mount halves, battery box. R2-D2 Head spindle, R2-D2 Base contact, R2-D2 Back panel and R2-D2 lenses.

Completing the Cockpit Base.

Lay out the cockpit base from stage 3, together with the side frames and two screws. One of the frames is marked with a “R” for the “right” moulded on the triangle brace near one end. Position the frame alongside the base, noting which way round it goes. Fit the side frame into the notches in the upright frames and secure the side frame to the rear upright with a screw. Repeat for the left frame on the other side.


Completing R2-D2.

Before assembling the remaining parts to R2-D2, it is advisable to check the LED bulb with the battery pack and test connector first. If the LED lights up, then continue with the build as instructed.

If the bulb does not light up, then disassemble R2’s leg and replace the two connectors in his foot the opposite way around in the recesses as instructed before. Reassemble and test again, you will now find the LED will work.



Take the parts from issue 1 and the ones supplied with this issue, along with the two legs and head dome you have already assembled.

Take the back panel of R2-D2’s body and fit the spindle into the semi-circular notches at the top and bottom. Fit the left leg into the semi-circular notch on the right shoulder then fit the right leg into the semi-circular notch on the left shoulder. Press the LED mount onto the LED fitted in the right leg, making sure it goes the right way up.

Loop the LED wiring round so you can fit the LED into the notch at the top of the body. Line the pins on the front panel with the four holes on the back, making sure you do not trap the wire. Press firmly into place, making sure the legs, spindle and LED fit into the notches.

Identify the six clear and coloured lenses that came with this issue, although only five are used for R2-D2.

Take the square clear display lens (3) and press it into the square hole at the front of R2’s head. Take the red display lens (2) and press it into the small round hole at the front. The round clear lens (5) fits into the large round hole at the front and the orange display lens (4) slots into the hole at the back of R2’s head. Finally take the clear lens (6) and press it into the slot at the side.

R2-D2’s head has a central mounting post with six ribs that fit into a matching hexagonal hole in the drive spindle. Line this up and press the head all the way into the spindle.

Fit two AAA batteries to the battery box, noting which way around the batteries go. Take the lead from the base contact and plug it into the battery box. Place the base contact on a flat surface and line up R2-D2’s right leg with it and stand him on the base contact to activate the LED.

This completes R2-D2.

Completing the first Laser Cannon.

Take the cannon assembled in stage 3 and remove the barrel assembly, the front and rear caps from the laser generator housing. Separate the housing and fit one end of the fibre optic into the notches in the housing with its tip in contact with the LED in the generator.

Expert Tip
As the light source is housed in the laser generator, you may notice a slight glow from this area when the cannon ‘fires’. If you prefer to conceal this effect, apply a coat of matt-black modelling paint. Paint the whole of the areas shown and allow both halves of the housing to dry before reassembling them.

Now reassemble the housing and slip the front end cap over the fibre optic and onto the housing.

Attach the rear cap onto the housing as before and slip the barrel assembly over the fibre optic and onto the front cap. Slide the tip onto the end of the fibre optic, flanged end first.

Fit half the suppressor mount over the flanged end of the tip and match up the pins and sockets on the two halves and press the suppressor mount together. Push the suppressor mount into the cannon and fit the flashback suppressor onto the tip, lining up the lug on the flashback and slot on the suppressor mount. Press the flashback suppressor all the way into the mount.

Push the smaller end of the clear emitter into the end of the tip.

Take the battery box you used to test R2-D2 and unplug the base contact. Plug in the lead from the laser cannon in its place and the internal LED should come on, illuminating the tip of the cannon via the fibre optic.

This issue is now complete.

Keep the completed laser cannon in a safe place, until needed later in the build.

Store any remaining parts in an issue labelled bag.
