Yep, I've spotted those figures before on Shapeways and will probably buy a pack 'to make up the numbers' so to speak. To be honest though, they all look the same and very generic in their facial features and clothing. That's why I prefer the Hecker & Goros pewter figures as they all have their own characters, whether it's facial expressions or different types of clothing. U-boat submariners didn't have a 'regulation' uniform like the army when at sea. In my time while serving on O- class diesel submarines, we could wear anything while on patrol. Most of the time it was overalls and t-shirts, but occasionally, you would get a few wearing Bermuda shirts. This was known as 'pirate rig'. Coupled with the fact we didn't have to shave, there were many faces with walrus moustaches, long beards or Elvis sideburns. Regards, Phil W. Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. This weeks update continues with adding modifications to the conning tower of my 1/48 scale model of U-boat U230. All of Monday evening was spent researching the different variations of conning tower sported by Type VIIC U-boats during WWII. Many and varied is the answer. The conning tower of U230 evolved over time, not only gaining a lower deck for an additional 3.7cm flak gun which I've mentioned before, but also the shape due to improved antennae, protection for the crew via armoured boxes and the relocation of the air intakes for the diesel engines. I decided to modify these air intakes first. Type VIIC's have their intakes routed from the engines via trunking before running up the inside of the conning tower, on both sides, to their respective inlets. Early Type VIIC's such as U96 had their inlets located on the outside rear edge of the conning tower as seen in the photo attached, taken from the supplied part-works instructions, part number 242. This is the 'grille' type intake, whereas U230 sported wire mesh, more of which later. Sticky Wickett attached the following image(s): Completed projects: 1/43 scale Bedford HA van / 1/43 scale MG TD sports car Current projects: 1/48 scale U-boat [U230] Future projects: 1/148 scale railway diorama / 1/50 scale R/C Volvo F89 logging truck / 1/148 scale Thunderbirds Fireflash

U230's inlets however were located on top of the trunking and fitted with wire mesh as opposed to the 'grille-type' mentioned before. The reason these inlets were moved was due to the addition of improved antennae which required a box section being added to the port side and an armoured box on the starboard side. I will cover the making of these in future updates. The attached photo shows the top of the trunking being drilled out. At this stage, the fairing that incorporates the top of the trunking is not glued in place.
