so now that the official build thread has been updated to issue 97 with the delivery on the camera, is there any info on its specs at all? stills resolution, image size, video resolution etc. also, why is another lens cover included in this issue? is there something wrong with the original one?

thanks

no worries. thanks fr the reply Tom. nice they're supplying improved items, but surely shouldn't things like this be be sorted out before it even reaches production? makes me feel slightly mugged off and that parts are being supplied early for the sake of it to stretch things out. why not forget supplying the lens at the beginning in the 1st place and instead continue the section we was building at that time...

Obviously it’s something that’s come to light since production/supply, and in fact has been improved at no additional cost to you.

The camera used is 720 HD (i.e. 1280 X 720) camera.

However, in order to transfer the video through wifi, MotionJpeg compression is used,. And the resolution seen on the mobile device will be reduced to 640 X 360.

Cheers for the update! Will this also be the resolution of photos taken by R2?

Thank you.

I would have thought so, otherwise why bother with a camera that is capable of 1280*720 if you can only use at at 640*360?

Logically, the conclusion is that if the video AND still are restricted to 640*360, that is the spec of the camera that would be supplied. As Tomick has told us that the video compression reduces the camera resolution from 1280*720 to 640*360, the logical supposition is that stills will be able to be taken at 1280*720.

So not even 1 megapixel, hopefully on the phone it shouldn't be too bad.

for using the video to drive the r2 this should be fine. two things: the phone screen needs room for controls so you may not use the whole phone screen for video anyway.

also 640x360 is about the res of old tv screens and they did ok back in the day to watch tv with!

and for driving i will take low res that is fast over a laging stream that is not keeping up with the droid.

True as far as video goes, but would have hoped for something better for the stills.

If people want a better video/stills camera it would need to be independent of the one supplied

You can get very small WiFi HD Spy Cameras - just need to find one that starts sending video over Wi-fi when voltage is supplied & fit instead of the supplied one. - It will of course mean you won’t be able to use the app for video, instead use a separate device to stream video to.

One thing though is if the supplied DeAg app checks the original video camera is used then this may mean still having the original camera connected (moved safely out of the way).

Some things to think about if one for modding R2 - search eBay & Amazon for WiFi Spy Video Cam.

Just have to think slightly outside the box 😎

i think we may have stills at the full res.

the quote was the to send *video* over wifi the lower res is needed.
that is to make a video stream, with a frame rate that looks good.

that does not mean that a still image capture has to be at the low res.

this is really a common thing, i have a Sony digital camera that can also take movies, but the movies are not at the full camera resolution.

i think really we need to see what we get when it's all done. it will not be much longer.

What I meant was that I was hoping for something better than less than 1 megapixel stills, nowadays even the worst cameras out there can take at least 5 megapixels.

It’s not intended as a sole purpose camera product, it’s camera is simply another of its feature’s.
