I boo-boo'd big time with my last attempt at carving out the wriggles on my build and landed up spending most of Sunday removing the wales where necessary and refitting them...Now, with the wales replaced, I have now begun to fit the Dolphins...Blink

That is one of the good things about this site and keeping a build diary...If you make a mistake and fail to spot it, it is great to hear from somebody who has picked up on your error and pointed it out to you so that you can correct it...thanks fellers...ThumpUp

Hi jonny! Cool

You might have made a boo-boo, but at least the standard of work in your boo-boo was great! just sorry I had to point it out, you put a lot of work into that I could tell.

Glad to see all is now well with your ship and you can finally move on, one day you will look back in your diary and have a good laugh about it.

It’s great to have the forum shipmates, the build diaries is a great idea! you can show the work you have done, be helped to spot problems, sharing information on the build and getting ideas for your own ship.

Nice work Jonny! BigGrin

For my little secret of bending planks..well, I have got a cheep pair of electric hair tongs plus an electric soldering iron...the latter causing me a lot of grief from the missus because for some reason it kept on tripping the fuses in the fuse box just when she was watching her favourite TV programmes..
LOL
But, I found it best to use a plastic container (i.e in my case a sugar storage container) stand your planks inside and fill with boiling water and leave for 10 - 15 minutes, remove soaked planks with tweezers and using the same container, clamp the wet planks to the outside circumference or apply wet to your model and allow to dry at room temperature...preferably over night...when dry, it will maintain the shape to which you secured it...here are some short lengths of wood that I wanted to bend...BigGrin

Cheep and nasty...or just simple and sweet???
LOL

To date, I've been using the "apply wet plank to model and allow to dry" method. Works well, but now that I've started work on the waterline planking, it takes too long.

Didn't get much time to work on my build today, but what I did do was to fit the Dolphins and soak the four pieces of 2mm x 5mm strips of wood then clamping them to the fore mentioned circular tea container that I nicked from the missus..leave them to dry over night and glue them to the bow post tomorrow...

Managed to grab a couple of hours on my build today where I set about completing the instruction of issue 44 and finished the installation of the Dolphins and decoration of the bow post section...

Great idea with the tea cup, it's amazing what we all use for various parts of the build. I can't remember which part or which household item I used once, but I do remember the look on my wifes face

I began to fit the decking today, it could be a long slow process as I have found a fair few planks that were slightly distorted (bent) and also, when laid into position, the thickness of the planks differed. However, I am slowly plodding on, and a number of pictures will follow...

Well, I continued with the decking today and spent a good part of my Sunday working on my build. As usual, I started like everybody else, swatting up on Mr.T's build and the instruction in the magazine..I thought that I was going well until I got to the point where I cut seven lengths of 22mm as mentioed in the magazine page 13 pat 16...I fitted them in place and continued with my build...but when I got to laying the decking on the starboard side, I found that there was a 1mm gap between the 22mm planks and the plank laid on the starboard side??Confused I checked the measurement and instruction, I even ripped the planking out and re-laid it, but still there was that 1mm gap.Cursing ..I had noticed tiny variances in the diameter and thickness of the planks, and so I will have to cut a small 22mm x 1mm strip of plank to fill the gap...Anyway, here are my pictures...as I contemplate the task of building seven cannon...Crying

Hi Jonny! Cool

I bet you couldn't believe it when you found that gap.

You have some 6mm x 1.5mm planks that are used to fill in the sides of the deck you won't need all of them so you could remove a small plank next to the gap and replace with a section from a 6mm x 1.5mm plank to plug the gap might look better for you mate.

It does look good now your getting the deck on mate!.

Hi Jonny, sorry to hear about your 1mm gap, Its to late now but I always start with a King plank running down the centre of the deck and build out from that (I did this with the Endeavour and San Fran)one Starboard - one Port - and so on then you can fit exactly at the Bulwarks.LOL LOL

Well....fun, fun, fun??? I thought that I would take a break from the main build and put together the eleven 12 pounder cannon that I had put away safe over the past months...Shouldn't take me long?? He said...famous last words.I started by separating all the necessary parts of the cannon into individual sections around 10am this morning...By eleven I had sanded the wooden parts down and by midday I had begun to super glue the main part of the gun carriage together (including my fingers) By 1pm I began to paint the barrels, then the wheels. At this point, I realized that these cannon will not be completed in one day?? Maybe two...we'll see?? So here are a couple of pics of my fowl up so far...
LOL LOL LOL

Oh!! By the way fellas...I finally found out what the two nails that came with each cannon were for???
TO KEEP THE LITTLE PESKY BRASS BITS STILL WHILE YOU PAINT EM!!!!
LOL LOL LOL

With luck, I will post pictures of the finished product tomorrow??? Well maybe Thursday...Crying
