Hi Alan or anyone that has tackled this section of the build pages 138-139 parts 2-5, I understand the stern section of the planking using the template,( understanding that I do these steps for both sides) but I'm lost on the part of tapering the middle and forward planks, and my main problem would be understanding part 3,4 and 5, note:I notice in photo 5 the top #7 plank starts off tight on plank #6 but begins to rise a little, if that is normal does a piece of plank fit between the gaps anyway that will be my new problem untill I can understand it, anyway if anyone can show some light on this I would appreciate thank you PS-in part 3 after tapering the plank 1mm and bend the plank But what do they mean draw the guide line for the taper by hand Ronald

Hi Ronald,
Drawing the guide line by hand. The plank is 5mm wide and you need to reduce the width of the plank as it goes round the bow by 1mm to 4mm. Therefore, after you have bent the plank you need to draw a line on the plank from the point where the taper starts to the end of the plank to a width of 4mm, this you can draw by hand. There should not be any gap between the plank your are fitting and the planks already fitted to the ship....
Regards
Alan

thanks Alan but it is still confusing how do I go about tapering a plank that is bent already wouldn't it be easier to taper the plank before bending also which end goes where does the 4mm side go the side or the bow area, and to answer your reply about there should not be any gaps in between plank # 7 and the lower one I get that but the photo # 4 does show a gap, also what about the other issues I mentioned # 5 can you explain what that means please in the mean time I will attempt to understand it by watching the video over and over again Ronald

You may also find this topic useful, it is something I put together some time ago on how I went about tapering planks: https://forum.model-spac...aspx?g=posts&t=6169
I find marking the taper out first and then sand down the taper on the strip with the use of a sanding block. The tapered edge should be glued against the planks already fitted, this leaves you with a straight edge ready to accept the next row of planks. Hope this helps. Regards Alan

sorry I wanted to mention as you said in your last message I kind of figured you would mark and taper the planks first which I like to do because the guide line method throws me off. one more thing I had asked this yesterday very important and not mention in the instructions which end of the taper goes to the bow the 1mm end or the 4mm end thank you Ronald

The first plank laid on row 9 should run from frame 15 to frame 22. Step 5 is advisory so makes no difference in what order it is printed, fit row 8 first then row 9. There is also no need to taper the middle planks of each row. In your latest post you ask whether the 1mm or the 4mm end goes to the bow, think you need to read again as there isn't a 1mm end. Your are tapering the plank by 1mm not to 1mm.. You have a 5mm plank that when laid will require to be tapered from around frame 13 from 5mm down to 4mm, not 1mm... the 4mm end of the plank goes to the bow with the tapered edge joining the planks you have previously fitted to the hull. This ensures you always have a straight edge for the next new row of planks being fitted. You need to get the best fit possible for all the planks laid with the aim of getting the edges of the planks to fit snuggly together, if by bevelling the edge of the new plank then the answer to your question would be yes. Regards Alan
