Using PVA glue I could position these small blocks so that the mesh grille sits flush with the top of the intake.

The profiled box section piece mentioned at the start of this post was then glued in place.

The next stage of my modifying the conning tower is the addition of a scratch built radar antennae [FuMO-30] that locates on the port side.

In 1942 the FuMO-30 was introduced having replaced previous versions. Differing in design, this radar consisted of a rectangular wire mesh antennae.

Using my 1/72 sale donor model to get the overall height and width, multiplying these dimensions by a factor of 1.5 to resize to 1/48 scale, i drew out a rough sketch to act as a guide. I also heavily referenced photos of U995, which also sported the FuMO-30, to make the small parts required.

The first step was to make the base as can be seen in the attached photo.

Frame work completed and checked for alignment against an engineers square, or could it be goal posts for the crew!

The attached photo shows both of these small supports in place. They provide rigidity to the angular and vertical sections.

The other side completed in the same way. By now, the whole structure was a bit easier to handle.
