From this point on i proceeded to build up the box section that houses the radar antennae. As before, plenty of measuring to ensure all aligned and when completed, the addition of 1.0mm square strip, fitted internally to support the corners. That's it for this week. Next weeks update see the completion of this housing before moving onto the fabrication of the port and starboard armoured boxes. These armoured boxes were retro-fitted to some U-boats during their service, including U230, to protect the crew from aircraft gunfire. Made of thick steel, they were eventually withdrawn due to the conning tower being top heavy due to the extra weight. This affected the performance of the u-boats as they rolled around in stormy conditions. The port armoured box is located forward of the radar mast housing, accommodating one crew member, while the larger, starboard armoured box could accommodate up to 5 crew members. Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. In this weeks update i scratch built the radar mast housing and started on the starboard armoured box. The attached photo shows semi-circular profiles made from 0.5mm thick plastic sheet that will form the curved shape of the radar mast housing. The holes are 2.0mm diameter to locate the brass rod of the radar mast and keep it square and perpendicular. I then inserted the brass rod of the radar mast through the holes and at the same time cut lengths of aluminium tube that slid over the rod and acted as supports for the profiled pieces. The second profile piece [from top down], split, but fortunately it split in such a way that it still supports the aluminium tube. Now that everything was fitted and fully supported i fabricated the actual housing from 0.5mm thick plastic sheet. After cutting to size, then bending it around a marker pen and holding in place with bulldog clips, i left it in a mug of boiling water for 5mins for the plastic to form a natural curve.
