Hi All,

Issue 91....it says that the centre foot should be attached using some 6m countersunk screws.

I can't find these screws or I've run out of them. The last set of countersunk screws were used to attach the base to the frame.

Anybody else had this or have I used the wrong screws somewhere else in the build.

The other issue....th white plastic screw covers that go on the centre leg - I had two that were angled for the top of the leg and 4 on a sprew that are straight but the instructions suggest they are slightly angled to match the contour of the foot.

Any advice please?!

Cheers

Lee

Hi Lee

I suspect you may have used the recommended screws in another part of the build or you may not have had them supplied in a previous issue. You will need to check your inventory of when screws were supplied to find out if you have missing ones or have used them for another part of the assembly. In the official build I still had the screws needed for this part of the assembly.

The grommets supplied in issue 91 are the ones that are used for the assembly of this part of the build. You may have inserted them incorectly for them to sit flush. You could try removing them and reinserting them as some of the gromets look a push fit still need to be orintated to fit correctly in there asigned places.

I've just watched a video on Youtube from one of the builders....they have used the rounder headed screws for the base....this is where I've used the countersunk screws....I'm sure the mag said use the counter-sunk / flat headed screws for the base...do you know which are the correct ones? Simple fix if I've used the wrong ones...

Again - from referencing the same builders video - they appear to have angled grommets - mine are pretty straight. I'll have a closer look tomorrow.

Got 92 and 93 to do but not much in those to attach.

Thanks for the quick reply!

The screws for this part of the build should be countersunk as specified and as I previously said I still had those screws saved as per the instructions if you have none then they have either been missing from an issue or used wrongly elsewhere in the build.

Following the instructions is paramount for the build and the placement of the correct screws. It may be a that you did not recieve the correct screws in a previous issue and you may need to reorder the issue where they were supplied.

As for which issue you will need I can not track your personal build or the screws used so far by yourself so its something you would need to work out if any are missing and need replacing.

The build you are referencing on YouTube is it the forum official video build or an independant builder. If it is an independant builder then there instructions should be ignored as the only builds to follow for the correct assembly of the parts are the supplied issue instructions or the official forum/video builds.

ill agree with arpurchase here regarding following independent builders on youtube. a lot of them dont read or follow the instructions correctly and make so many mistakes.

as for using countersunk screws to attach the base i believe you may have this wrong. im pretty sure the mag stated to use 2.5 x 6mm screws, which to me would equate to the dome headed screws as normal, as there are no countersunk recesses for the screws to sit in. In doing so could actually damage the base panel as the countersunk screws would drive into the panel incorrectly. the image also looks like it shows the dome head screws. also, when it comes to attaching the centre foot, the instructions refer specifically to contersink screws, where the previous stage does not. thats how i read it anyway.

hope this helps.

You are correct that the screws used to fix the white plastic base plate in position onto the frame are the 2.5 x 6mm dome headed screws .

But the querry was about the fixing of the centre foot to the body frame which if you look at issue 67 it clearly shows all four screw holes in the metal plates for the mounting of the central foot are countersunk and therefore the apropriate screws for that part of the assembly should be used.

So I have now corrected my mistake and replaced the flat-headed screws that I used to screw the base on with for the domed screws...thus freeing up the flat counter-sunk screws for the foot plate.

Oh - one more question re issue 93...I assume at some point we are going to screw down the other end of the CPU bracket? It's a bit odd that it's been left unscrewed in this issue...

You should have a few 2.5 x 4mm screws in your spares box just use them to fix it in place, the official build also says to use four 2.5 x 4mm screws for this part of the assembly.

"Fit the assembly into R2-D2, ensuring it is the correct way round. Fit the base of the bracket into the square recess in the frame and secure the bottom of the bracket with four 2.5 x 4mm screws."

So it does - my bad! Will screw it down!

(BTW - Probably not a good idea to build R2 when you're not feeling 100% - I've got a bug or something!!)
