I still have a little more work to complete the housing, but i decided to turn my attention to the starboard armoured box for the next part of this update. I mentioned last week that these armoured boxes were fitted to protect the lookouts from aircraft fire. The order to fit these boxes was given on the 4th June 1943. Sometimes there would be one box, while other U-boats sported one on each side of the conning tower, U230 included. The design of the boxes differed between boats; some had round edges, other sharp edges with the port box further forward than the starboard one. The excessive weight of these boxes reduced stability of the U-boats in high seas. As a result an order to remove the boxes was placed on the 30th October 1943, so they were only in use for 5 months. However, some boats did retain the boxes long after the order was issued. The attached photo shows U230, which my model is based on, in 1943. You can clearly see the armoured box on the upper side of the conning tower. If you look really carefully at the armoured box you can just make out the 'laughing swordfish' emblem of the 9th flotilla of which the infamous U96 also belonged. However, when this photo was taken in 1943, U230 was no longer based with this flotilla and should of changed the emblem to be inline with it's new flotilla, but was allowed to keep the 'laughing swordfish'. Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. In this weeks update i turned my attention back to the port armoured box, located just forward of the radar mast housing. As i mentioned in previous posts, the armoured boxes were built to protect the lookouts from aircraft gunfire. The starboard box, being larger, could accommodate up to 5 crew members in the event of an aerial attack, while the port armoured box was much smaller and could accommodate only one crew member. The attached photo shows the port armoured box part way through its construction. The attached photo shows the underside of the radar mast housing fitted with a tapered section to blend it into the conning tower. This was based on the only b/w photo i have showing the port side of U230's radar mast.
