The good-old sound of the DC-9

Yes, that sound is nothing more than tracks of our earthly DC-9 engines that McDonnell Douglass produced in the early 80s. Well, at least two of them played just slightly out of sync, the gentle hum of a motion control rig at industrial light and sound, a dentists air jet, and water pipes. the sound of the engine is entirely unique and probably couldn’t actually be recreated by any mechanical engine in our time.

My understanding is that the engine sound as it passes by the camera was sourced primarily from a P-51 Mustang.

The book "The Sounds of Star Wars" by JW Rinzler gives great information as to where the sounds of Star Wars came from.

The sound of the Falcon fly-by is "derived essentially from a slowed down P-51, which Burtt recorded at the California National Air Races in the Mojave Desert".

For the Hyperspace jump Burtt "took an old DC-3 airplane steady recording and created a water tank effect" which is two recordings of the same sound slightly out of sync with each other before adding the sound of the motion control motors used by ILM for filming the models.
