Has the logic board been designed and built already? What are the specs and will we be able to programme it? Will the controller software be open sourced?
A RESTful API would be amazing! I can imagine 100's of fun possibilities connecting an R2 unit to IFTTT or the like.
Also can you provide additional technical specifications on the camera, projector, sensors and interfaces?

The board is not programablle and the controller software is not open sourced and not intended as such, the additional spec info is not available as yet.

Thanks for the reply Tomick.
Maybe the build community might work on Raspberry pi or Arduino based replacement logic board. It would be a shame to spend nearly a £1K on a robot without it being able to interface with home automation.
R2, what's the weather today? R2, tell me when someone is at the front door. R2, play the Imperial War March R2, turn everything off.
Do you know any details on who is designing the R2D2 software? Is it the same company that designed Robi ( Robo Garage) ? I'm wondering if we can expect the same standard as Robi for voice recognition and AI?

Over the course of the 100 magazines, do you think it likely we will learn more about the designer and teach teams behind the project? Like a behind the scenes look with interviews? I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one that would find this interesting.

I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one that would find this interesting. The magazine contains behind the scenes info about the techniques used to construct and film the droids, ships, sets and creatures of all the Star Wars movies. Also a droid directory which explores how R2-D2 fits into a Star Wars universe packed with droids, where you will discover their functional features through blueprints, specification sheets and a comprehensive technical analysis. Unlike Robi, there isn't going to be a great deal of info about how our R2 was designed as this title revolves around R2 himself rather than how the model came to be.

Thanks Tomick, your quick responses are really appreciated. Looking forward to additional tech specs for camera, projector, sensors, IO and storage.

does this come with a magnetic restraining bolt and do the various probes open and close remotely, or do you have to open them manually? My current builds: The Millennium Falcon, Suzuki GSX 1300R Hayabusa, Ford Mustang Shelby

All the probes open and close remotely not manually. The bolt I will investigate.

Hope this is the right topic area to post this, just a question really that may be of interest. The in built camera takes stills and video (in itself quite a brilliant feature), so would we then be able to video something say ourselves giving a message to Obi wan, then project that using the projector on a flat surface - because that would be awesome. Imagine it send a message to the kids in the other room saying tea is ready via R2D2, among other stuff. Hey I am 50 I have to save my legs, plus I am very lazy If you build it he will come Built - Eaglemoss 3D Printer. Building - R2D2 National league Champions 2017 FA Cup Quarter Finalists 2017

Thx and Greetings from Germany Welcome to ModelSpace. R2 does not speak as such, he communicates by chirps & whistles which is the same in any language/country. Are you thinking of Robi, which is country specific and speaks in the language of the country he is purchased in as long as he has been purchased directly from DeAgostini ModelSpace, because a few people in the UK and USA have purchased Robi via Japan, italy or even eBay, only to discover he is a Japanese/Italian version, where as the UK version speaks English and therefore you must check which version.

That should keep us entertained for about a minute and a half. Shouldn't be too difficult to adapt one of those cheap Chinese projectors to fit in there though, just got to figure how to record and display our own videos

If I recall rightly there was only a couple of times it featured which is both of the projections it has.

The question that arose and what prompted beavers request are how the trigger words and voice commands are going to be handled in the non UK versions. Would we need to try and speak French with the French R2 or is it going to be able to react both French and English?

R2 bought in France will only respond to French voice commands, basically R2 is country specific in terms of his understanding. There is no option to swop to English on the unit and an English version will not be offered for sale as a separate item.

All locks can be unlocked, you just have to find the right key!
Once found, then programming should be possible!

Has anyone tried connecting a Hdmi cable from the board to a tv to see what comes up?
