I am going to attempt to do an enhancement to my build by putting in the carved side panels to both entrances,in order to do this I needed graphics and photos of the area, fortunatly JASE has produced these and has given me permission to reproduce these on this forum for the purpose of this "mod"(JASE HOLDS THE COPYRIGHT TO THESE PHOTOS AND GRAPHICS PLEASE DO NOT REPRODUCE WITHOUT HIS PERMISSION)

First off here are the photos and graphics, the mod will follow :-

Next job is to prepare wood for a lintel, I want to get the shape (as per the drawing) of the top of the door, so I want to make it thicker in order to file it into shape.

I have chosen dark wood as I will be able to get a good colour match to the original photo, the wood I have used is enough for 3 lintels (in case I make a mistake)Huh

The final job for this session (While the glue hardens in the lintel) is to choose the wood for the actual side panels and step,as you can see this is a slow process but doing enhancements always is, and as I always say MODELLING IS A JOURNEY NOT A DESTINATION just always take your time, any comments gratefully received here is the side panel wood -

I'm also watching with interest. Are you planning to file/carve the decoration into the wood?

An alternative approach might be to create the basic shape in wood and then use 'Green Stuff' to model the decoration. Capt Stedders, who unfortunately doesn't seem to be contributing at the moment, was the 'Green Stuff' artist.

'Green Stuff' is a two-part modelling resin. You mix together the blue and yellow components to get a green mixture which can be rolled out into thin strings which can be shaped and then left to harden.

Recently I made a George III cypher to go on the barrel of a 12pdr gun model that I am making, using a sample of 'Green Stuff' which Stedders had sent me. With some practice, it was relatively easy to create the shape that I wanted

First attempt

Final result stuck to barrel and painted. Not perfect but OK for a first effort.

As I said Stedders is the expert and if you search on 'Green Stuff' or Stedders, there will be some of his examples. He also did some good articles on the subject of model painting.

Hi Mike,

I purchased one of Stedders "GR" stamps and he sent it with a quantity of green stuff, your insigniers look great on the gun great jobBigGrin LOL

To be honest I was not planning to do the crest at the top of the door just the framework and the side panels, I did not think that crest was around in 1805 (correct me if I am wrong) so I was leaving it off.Huh

But-------- ?

Hi Again

I was wondering where you got your information from, regarding the crest over the entry port?

I know how much controversy the Entry Ports can generate!!??!!Crying

This is an interesting link Restoring Victory

Ian G Brennan was invited to carve the new starboard Entry Port Canopy in 1990/91 and the assumption was that the Entry Port was the original from the 1765 build and had been covered in successive layers of black paint, however the oak was rotting underneath.

Ian carried out the new carving based on the old timbers with the paint removed and he included the crest.

Regarding the Green Stuff, I was thinking that would bring out the carvings on the side brackets as well as using it for the crest.

At least we both have a sample from the same source!!

Before you go dashing off to make the entry port canopy, these are supplied as castings (roof & sides), which are painted and installed at 74, (no crest beneath the roof top).

If you want an extra touch of detail to the canopy roof top, instead of painting it dull grey to simulate lead sheet, the roof top can be clad with lead foil to simulate how it acttually is.

Some wine bottle's have lead foil caps which can be utilised Wink

You have let yourself in for a bit of 'kit bashing' which Zeptrader will probably agree with, however Tomick's post is food for thought!

I shall follow your progress with continued interest!

Just make the items but dont glue on, then compare or adapt when the parts are released in the magazine, you cant loose.

Its so small that just making a trial one is not gonna use that much wood.

Stick it on with a little blutack stand back and admire, try various different ways of doing it, learn from your first attempt, you will be surprised how it comes out.

Firstly, thanks Mr `T for that brillient idea which I will adopt ( as usual we can rely on you to come up trumps)I am not doing a mod of the canopy, I thought De Ag would provide that.

Could you tell me what is the dimension of the space between the frame and the canopy, that is available to me for the crest please Mr `T

Thank you. "wheres that wine bottle" oh no its a screw cap keep drinking!!!!!!!!!!!Blink Blink LOL LOL
