Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. Another short update this week due to the festive period and all that entails. On the original conning tower there are two sets of small free-flood holes on each side. Due to extensive scratch-building some of these had been filed away, so it was a case of opening these back up, albeit with a slightly different pattern as per my b/w photo. The attached photo shows the starboard side. The three small dimples on the right hand side are the locations of the original holes and these will be filled in and sanded smooth at a later date. The next step was to mark out the locations for the steps that lead up each side of the conning tower. The attached photo shows the horizontal lines being drawn out using the 'pencil clamped to an engineers square' method. All marking out finished on both sides including the vertical lines. These were drawn on after a bit of measuring to ensure the step location holes would be drilled to the correct width. This photo shows the step location holes being drilled out with a 0.55mm diameter drill. I then made up 8 steps using 0.5mm diameter brass rod. I bent them around a piece of wood which happened to be the correct width and checked them against my drilled holes for alignment. It was at this juncture that I decided to conclude this weeks update as I still have a bit more work to get these steps fitted and modelling time will be sporadic during the next few days. Looking good Phil. This really is a mammoth project and I admire your perseverance with this lengthy build (I think I was still in short trousers when you started it!).
